They defined a generation, were the originators of girl power and even wore iconic dresses, now the Spice Girls have returned to give details of their brand new musical which will open later on this year in London’s Piccadilly Theatre. They last reunited four years ago for the Return Of The Spice Girls tour and following numerous hints on Twitter, the girls are back to announce details of the West End musical which is based on their songs. It seemed a perfectly natural choice then to go back to the hotel where it all began, where the girls: Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell filmed their first single Wannabe in 1996 at the St Pancras Hotel in London.
And it appears that age has been kind to all the Spices with Posh, 38, flying in especially from her base in Los Angeles, despite not managing to raise a smile with her former bandmates, going for a military outfit complete with killer boots. The others looked happy enough with Mel B, 37, looking gorgeous in a simple grey shift dress, Geri and Emma going for a more girlie look albeit with heels, and Mel C wearing a beautiful white Ane maxi dress. The musical, which is called Viva Forever!, tells the story of ‘a beautiful, talented girl and her best friends who get swept up in the obsession of today’s TV celebrity culture’. It ‘charts her journey into the world of overnight fame and its impact on her relationships with her mother and the friends she thought she’d have forever’.
The musical is based on the songs from the Spice Girls but is written by comedienne Jennifer Saunders and producer by Judy Craymer, the lady that gave us Mamma Mia! Both ladies were keen to be involved in the project from the start, as they told the media, “I loved what the Spice Girls did for women’s confidence. There’s something very empowering about them.” Craymer commented and Saunders, who had a small cameo in their film Spice World, said, “The second I knew this project was up for grabs I rang my agent and said I had to be involved.” Jukebox musicals, as they are known, have been incredibly successful, and some have had a huge following, such as Mamma Mia! (featuring Abba songs), Thriller Live (with Michael Jackson songs) and We Will Rock You (songs by Queen).
So although there may not be a possibility of a Spice Girls reunion tour, this musical should please the girls diehard fans. Over the last few years it has been Mel B that has questioned whether there would be another Spice Girls tour but it is thought that Victoria was against the idea because of her new career as a fashion designer. In fact, Posh did say this year that “I was never going to be the best singer and it wasn’t my passion.” And she was the only one who did not have a solo singing preformance in the last tour. Their Return Of The Spice Girls world tour had to end prematurely when they cancelled the gigs in South America, South Africa and Asia.
The musical is due to open at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End on December 11.
