Chigago-based mobile phone manufacturer Motorola has released not one, not two, but three new versions of its Droid handsets.
The company hit the headlines when it was bought out by Google in May this year, but then all went quiet about the new partnership for a few months.
Now, it would appear Motorola has a whole new lease of life under its parent company, with the official announcement that three new devices are on their way – the RAZR HD, the RAZR Maxx HD, and the RAZR M, which is aimed at the mid-range market.
Motorola has come out fighting with the RAZR HD which has a 4.7-inch screen with an impressive resolution of 1,280×720 – around 312 pixels per inch.
Not only is that an upgrade from the current RAZR, which has a 960×540 display but Motorola claims it is beating Apple at its own game by offering colour saturation that is 85 per cent better than Apple’s iPhone 4S.
Motorola has also put itself head-to-head with South Korean rival Samsung, saying its new RAZR has a better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy S III, with around 16 hours of talk time before you have to recharge. The new handset will come in either glossy black or crisp clean white.
Motorola’s Maxx version has a whopping 21 hours of talk time and specifications released for the cheaper RAZR M reveal it has a 4.3-inch screen, an 8 megapixel camera and 8GB of internal storage.
The RAZR M is expected to go on sale for $99 and will be available first in the US but is expected to come to the UK very shortly. No details on prices or release dates for the other two versions have been released yet.
Reports are that the RAZR M will launch running with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, rather than the newest Android OS 4.1 Jelly Bean, but Motorola has indicated that the RAZR M would receive a Jelly Bean update later this year.
These phones are the first new releases since Motorola, which started life in Illinois called Galvin Manufacturing Corporation, became part of Google.
Motorola’s chief executive Dennis Woodside, who used to work at Google, said he hoped the launch represented the beginning of a new successful era for the company, describing it as the start of the “new Motorola”.
Woodside believes the merger with Google gives Motorola key advantages over its rivals, even over some of the bigger players, and he cited a superior know-how in 4G LTE, longer lasting battery life for its phones and a pure focus on Android as just some of the reasons he feels consumers will make the move to Motorola.
“We’re deciding as a company to stand for innovation,” he added.
Motorola will be hoping it is innovative enough to turn around the company’s fortunes. Before its acquisition, Motorola posted a loss of $86m in the second quarter of last year and, in latest figures, it posted a further loss of $233m. Whether Google’s influence, and funds, can get Motorola back in the black remains to be seen.
