The Rise of the Backless Dress

When celebrities start to show an interest in a certain trend, you know you’re onto a good thing, and many of Hollywood’s A Listers, such as Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Blake Lively, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Jennifer Lopez have all sported backless dresses recently. The great thing about wearing a backless dress is that it is both demure and sexy, and for those of us who don’t like to flash too much cleavage, it is an ideal way to show off some skin and be suggestive, whilst remaining classy at the same time.

There are a few rules on how to wear a backless dress however: first up, always focus the attention on the back by keeping the front relatively simple, so avoid fussy detailing at the bust, over extravagant prints and patterns, and let your back do the talking.

Accessories should also be kept to a minimum, unless you are thinking of draping some jewelry over your back, so keep to small and delicate earrings and go without a necklace as many backless dress have high necks at the front to compensate.

As for hairstyle, you don’t want your hair to get in the way of your back, so always wear it in some kind of ‘updo’, as in a ponytail, chignon, or a bun. Depending on what type of backless dress you decide, if it is a more casual style you can always style your hair in braids or tease down some strands from a bun to create a more messed up look. For elegant wear however, keep it trim and coiffured.

Finally, don’t forget to wear the correct bra, as a droopy chest at the front can ruin all your best efforts round the back! Under no conditions should any bra straps be visible, and one other thing to be wary of is wearing a bra a few hours before you pop on the backless dress, as you could get indentation marks left from before. So go braless for a day and then pop on a bra with either a very low strap, or swap your normal bra for a corset.
