For those of you who have just forked out a few grand on up dating your kitchen, it’s best you look away now, because for pure indulgence and luxury, here is a fridge that costs more than the average kitchen. The Meneghini La Cambusa refrigerator costs around $41,500 and can be custom-fitted with a range of technological gadgets which include a coffee maker, ice-maker, temperature controlled pantry and even a flat-screen television.
The Meneghini La Cambusa ‘cooling unit’ comes with a wooden exterior, brass handles and looks more like a piece of antiquated furniture than white goods. Clearly designed for those who are in the super rich bracket, the cooling unit features a Miele coffee system, Miele microwave oven and steam oven, flat-screen television, ice-maker and has a temperature-controlled pantry. The unit can be custom made to suit your requirements and as such, comes with different price tags but typically you can expect to pay around the $40,000 dollar mark.
One retailer, Robey’s, in the UK, who are stocking the super fridge, says that the wooden frame alone costs around $26,000, which can be painted in a choice of more than 500 colours. You then start adding on the extras, such as the brass handles, glass shelving and the fridge and freezer units. Then if you want modern appliances, you can pop in your ice maker, a microwave oven, a steam oven, the coffee maker, even a flat screen televisions! These are all optional extras which the Italian manufacturers say makes The Meneghini La Cambusa fridge more appealing to it’s high end customers. New York Magazine writes that customers have seen it as the perfect addition for ‘poolside parties, because, yes, some, clients have put these units poolside.’
One fan of the state-of-the-art Meneghini fridges is said to be Nigella Lawson, and it is thought that she owns a cheaper version in the Meneghini range of a $13,000 La Ghiacciaia made in cream. The La Cambusa fridge has three doors, measures 8.2ft wide, weighs 1,100 pounds and includes 26.6 cubic feet of storage space. At the centre of the fridge is a Liebherr refrigerator system, which costs $1,200 and you can also get a temperature-controlled pantry for dry storage. As for which sort of customers this appeals to, the website www.apartmenttherapy.com writes: “We’re set upon purchasing a Meneghini fridge/freezer in yellow when our lottery boat comes to harbour. At that cost, we’d consider it the start of a family heirloom to pass along to generations; at least the design is worthy of the designation.”
