The Novelty Clutch: The stylish way to carry your essentials

I’ve always been a kind of grab it and go girl; the sort of woman who can’t be bothered with short handled totes or handbags that dangle daintily over your arm. I need both my hands free to do some speed shopping, without being restricted by the very thing that holds the important item that pays for all these things – my purse. I prefer across the body bags, where you sling your handbag over your shoulder and forget all about it, free to thrust your arms into the latest sales rails, bargain veg bins, or charity shop shelves.

But show me this new range of novelty clutch bags and I go all dewy eyed and my handbag rules go out of the window. With designer brands such as Charlotte Olympia, Alexander McQueen and Sophie Webster leading the trend, a novelty clutch bag can lift an outfit from the medicore to the extraordinary. We have picked our five favourite novelty clutches, from speech bubbles, cartoon angels to monochrome toucans. Check these out:

Sophia Webster 'Hold Me Speech Bubble' is a leather clutch

This Sophia Webster ‘Hold Me Speech Bubble’ is a leather clutch priced at £340 and is one of our utmost favourites. The black and white clutch features the gorgeous candy coloured ‘Hold Me’ lettering, and the clutch zips up around the sides. The clutch is plain white at the back and we think this is a real statement piece. Materials are white calf leather with black patent-leather trims, fully lined in faille.

Charlotte Olympia 'C'est La Vie' embroidered printed crepe de chine clutch

Okay so this Charlotte Olympia ‘C’est La Vie’ embroidered printed crepe de chine clutch is pretty expensive at £845 but it is inspired by a magazine cover that featured Brigitte Bardot! The bag comes with a designer-stamped comb and a dust bag to keep it in pristine condition. It is fully lined in blush satin, has a snap frame fastening, gold tone frame and an internal zip-fastening and pouch pocket. A great clutch for movie fans.

Jimmy Choo + Rob Pruitt - The 'Angel Swarovski' crystal panda minaudière

Jimmy Choo + Rob Pruitt – The ‘Angel Swarovski’ crystal panda minaudière

Well if you thought £800 quid was expensive, gird your loins for this one folks; the reason this Jimmy Choo collaboration with Rob Pruitt is priced at a cool £9,500 is because only 14 were ever made. The ‘Angel Swarovski’ crystal panda minaudière is an amazing fusion of Jimmy Choo’s signature glamour and the graphic Rob Pruitt’s motif. All of these gorgeous overstated clutches are numbered and signed by Pruitt, and include over 11,000 hand-applied Swarovski crystals, finished with a luxe leather lining.

Charlotte Olympia - The 'Toucan' suede and leather clutch

Charlotte Olympia – The ‘Toucan’ suede and leather clutch

This is really one of Charlotte Olympia’s more playful designs, but it is very eye-catching. The ‘Toucan’ suede and leather clutch, costing £395 is made from kid black suede, and comes with a detachable chain shoulder strap, and includes orange, yellow and white leather appliqués. It features an internal zip-fastening pocket, a designer plaque, a zip fastening along top with signature gold web zip pull.

Alexander McQueen 'De Manta' printed silk-satin clutch

Alexander McQueen ‘De Manta’ printed silk-satin clutch

I have kept this clutch until last, as I love it so much, and although I have included it in this novelty clutch article, it really is more beautiful than a novelty piece. This Alexander McQueen ‘De Manta’ printed silk-satin clutch is priced at £315, and it reminds me of a delicate butterfly. It is actually inspired by the dragonflies that appear in Art Deco jewelry. Made from silk-satin, it features magnetic fold-over corners with black leather trim, an internal zip-fastening pocket, a 2-way zip fastening along top and it comes with its own dust bag.
