The Hairy Dieters: How to Love Food and Lose Weight

The Hairy Bikers radically change lifestyles but stay true to their love of great food, as they embark on a campaign to lose two-and-a-half stones in three months.

In fact, they have lost an incredible six stone between them, so how did they do it? If you want to find out, you can buy this book and watch the accompanying BBC2 series that started last Thursday. The theme of the book and the series is calorie counting, something us ladies on a diet are all too familiar with.

What I like about both the book and TV programme is that we go on the Hairy Bikers journey with them as they consult doctors and nutritionists, in order to see how a career in food has affected their waistlines.

In fairness to the biking pair, although in recent series they were always seen to be loving their food, and cooked good, hearty and traditional fare, they never did a ‘Nigella’ and in my mind, they cooked and ate quite a healthy diet. Although most of their recipes would always include a pie, hot pot, cheese cakes, you get the idea, in this new series they actually offer you past recipes to scrutinise and you can see for yourself, and wonder where did the pounds creep on? It is this sense of ‘it’s happening to me too’ and the feeling that you can easily emphasise with the hairy pair, that makes this book, and series, so watchable.

There’s none of the pretentious licking of spoons and serving up recipes with over twenty impossible to source ingredients. Here we have two middle aged blokes that have let themselves go without realising it and you can just picture wives all across the UK prodding their husbands saying, “I’m cooking you that tomorrow.”

A nutritionist shows them that Dave’s so called healthy breakfast of muesli and yoghurt with walnuts actually contains a whopping 1,000 calories and tells him that his diet is around 45% fat, adding that, “It doesn’t matter if it’s olive oil, lard or butter … calorie-wise, it’s all the same.”

As for the book, recipes include some low fat versions of the nation’s favourites, such as masala-marinated chicken with minted yoghurt sauce, toasted crumpets and warm spiced berries with yoghurt and honey, a special cassoulet, skinny beef lasagne and their special low fat breakfast – pan-fried bacon with poached egg and balsamic tomatoes.
