To celebrate the success of the end of the season five series of the US TV hit series – Mad Men, Matthew Weiner, the show’s creator, writer, director and all round good guy, gave every single member of the cast and crew a bag at the wrap party. But not any old bag, this was a specially commissioned bag made by a British designer The Cambridge Satchel Company. Each bag was a classic dark brown, handmade Cambridge Satchel with the logo of the fictional advertising agency – Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce – included on the front of the bag. Apparently, the UK company was recommended to Weiner by the TV show’s costume designer Janie Bryant, who herself owns a bag from the Cambridge Satchel range in bright yellow neon. Once the go ahead was given, the company then had to race against time to handmake 300 customised bags for the party. And it seems that the classy style of the bags fitted perfectly with the ad agency’s image. Creator of the company – Julie Deane told in an interview to The Telegraph, “The classic style of Mad Men made our Cambridge Satchels the perfect way to mark the end of filming. We are proud and delighted to be associated with such a stylish programme.”
The Cambridge Satchel Company was created when in 2008, co-founder Julie Deane was trying to find ways to raise money in order to move her daughter away from a school in which she was being bullied. Her mother – Freda Thomas came up with an idea of making bags similar to ones that perhaps the characters in the now famous Harry Potter books and movies would use. And thus the company was born. Celebrities that love the Cambridge bags are Zooey Deschanel, Alexa Chung and Elle Fanning. Of course, here at Shoppersbase, we wanted to see what all the fuss was about so we sneaked a look at the website and have handpicked a few of our favourites for you to see.
The Fluoro – From £105
The classic satchel with a contemporary twist. This bag offers a front buckle fastening, an adjustable shoulder strap and front pocket. Due to the nature of the leather dying process, some colour irregularity may occur when blind embossing is used on the satchel. We would recommend a that a colour foil is chosen if embossing for the best finish.
