The Best Ways to Learn How to Cook

Learning how to cook can be a bit daunting. To those of us who aren’t blessed with instinctive cookery skills, the process of combining ingredients into perfectly flavoured food can seem like some arcane magic! But cooking is a skill we can all develop, and we’ve sought to provide you with the low-down on all the best ways to go about it.

Many people find that they are taught how to cook by relatives; parents, siblings, or extended family members have shown them how to cook during their childhood and youth, leaving them with a lot of acquired knowledge that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. But what do you do if that didn’t happen, or – worse, perhaps – if your relatives weren’t very good cooks to begin with?

Cooking is very “in” right now, with celebrity chefs almost a dime a dozen and cookery shows flooding the TV guide. While it seems like madness, this can be a good way to expand on an existing cooking skill, no matter how basic. You can take notes during the show and look up the exact recipe later; most TV channels that run cookery shows will make recipes available to the public online.

If you need to start from scratch, however, this may not be the best way to go about things. You may feel you’ve been thrown in at the deep end a little, so you need to start by laying a foundation of basic cooking knowledge.

Delia Smith has written a book series called Delia’s Complete Cookery course, which starts from scratch and teaches you all the basics before moving on to more complicated abilities. With step-by-step instructions and careful explanations, you’ll find it simple to follow the book’s lessons and you’ll soon build up your confidence in the kitchen to where you can tackle any project.

Cookery lessons are another option. They may seem a little intimidating at first, but you can find plenty of lessons geared towards complete beginners. They can be a bit more expensive, but you’re essentially paying for the instructor’s one-on-one attention and their ability to help you with any issues you may experience, and that’s worth a lot!

No matter how you decide to learn about cooking, don’t give up on yourself. Ultimately, cooking is about following instructions, and once you understand how to follow cooking instructions correctly and become familiar with proportions, cooking times and preparation methods you’ll be ready to start experimenting on your own!
