There are two factors you need to consider when buying one:

  • The tog rating
  • The material and filling

The tog rating describes the thickness of the duvet and start from 3 tog which is suitable for summer, and go up to 15 tog. You can use anything under a 7.5 tog for summer, but you also need to consider the filling.

There are natural fillings and synthetic ones. Natural fillings tend to be down or feathers such as duck or goose, and synthetic fillings include microfibre and hollowfibre.

There are pros and cons with both.

Natural fillings could cause irritation for allergy sufferers but provide a much softer and luxurious feel to the sleeper.

Synthetic fillings can be doctored to stop bacteria or fungus forming.
