I am a wash and go kind of girl, but, I dye my hair. So when it comes to re-dyeing my roots, I tend to leave it for as long as possible because it is such a chore.
So when I heard about these miraculous products called root touch-ups that don’t use actual hair dye, I was all ears. These products use a variety of different substances to colour your roots, including powder, sprays and liquids. But surely they wouldn’t be as good as the actual dye I had been using? I mean, they could never match the actual colour, could they?
Well, the thing is, what with all that ombre hair business and tonal shades and the current fashion where you look as if you haven’t been to a salon for months, getting the exact shade isn’t that important.
With this in mind, we have picked our favourites:
Described as ‘hair mascara’, this root cover up comes in three colours – light brown/blonde, medium brown and dark brown. Application is easy, you just use the wand to add product to any areas that need a bit of colour.
This product is probably the easiest way to touch up your roots as it features a handy brush that you just use to comb through the areas you want to dye. The only downside is that there are only three shades – black, dark brown and light brown. Dries really quickly though and unlike some powder formulas does not leave a sticky residue.
Available in three shades – light brown to medium blonde, light brown and dark brown to black, this root cover up is a powder that works by using a magnetic binding factor to attach to the hair. The magnetic element means that the product sticks like glue to your hair throughout the day.
This is a spray that comes in six different colours – black, red, dark brown, light to medium brown, dark blonde and light to medium blonde. Easy to use, you simply spray the product onto the areas that need colouring.
Available in seven shades – light blonde, dark blonde, cool brown, light brown, red, dark brown and black, this product uses a non-permanent hair dye to retouch your roots. For those that do not like powders or sprays, this is most like dyeing your hair.
Trust John Frieda to come up with the goods, well I mean, the guy is a hairdresser. This product is the most sophisticated of them all as it features two colour palettes that allow you to blend and customise your root colour. A powder product that has staying power.
A pencil stick here that only comes in three colours – dark blonde, light brown and dark brown, but we like the fact that you can use it as both a root touch up and an eyebrow pencil. be warned though, the pencil is quite fat and chubby so be careful when drawing on the brows :)
This spray comes in five different colours – platinum, blonde, light brown, dark brown, red and black. It contains micro fine pigments that attach themselves to your own hair and help to hide away regrowth.
