This time of year all across the UK towns and villages are making the most of the warm weather. From fetes to Proms in the Park, there’s nothing like getting outdoors and eating al fresco. But what to sit on? Picnic blankets come in all shapes and sizes and we have recommended the ten best regarding ease of wash, length, whether they are waterproof and how easy they are to carry.
Here are ten of the best picnic blankets:
Patterned Picnic Mat – £10.99
This picnic blanket has a waterproof backing and a really funky design on the top of it. It also has a carry handle so it’s easy to tote about and the compact and lightweight nature of the mat makes it ideal for an impromptu trip outdoors.
Navigate 2 – Person Picnic blanket in a bag – £11.49
This is more of a soft fleecy style of material and it is large enough for two people to sit on easily. A lovely nautical theme of navy and white stripes and it comes with an adjustable shoulder strap and packs down well for storage when not on use.
Frida Parrot picnic blanket – £15.60
Show your artistic side with this fabulous Frida parrot design that is made from polyester, is waterproof and wipes down easily. Comes with its own carry handle and adjustable buckles and if you really like the design you’ll be pleased to know that there are other matching items in this range, including a cool bag.
Picnic French Navy Shell Blanket – £19.95
We love the colours and the pattern on this picnic blanket from Joules. Made from polyester it is not only waterproof but you can also clean it easily. As it is quite thick you can use it on damp grass and you won’t feel any moisture getting through. It is large enough for four people and comes with a carry strap and folds up easily. If you don’t love this design there is another one in a grey and pink floral pattern.
John Lewis Large Picnic Rug, Green and Navy – £28.00
Made with a waterproof backing and a soft tweed front, this combines function with comfort perfectly. Will fit a family of four easily and is lovely and soft to the touch. Comes with a carry strap and just roll it up when not in use.
Green Flower Blanket Extra Large – £39.50
Made using 100% cotton this green flower design is large enough for a large group of children or big families. There is a waterproof backing which is always handy and the blanket comes with its very own bag which is great for both carrying and storage. We also like the fact that you can wash this easily in the machine so we think you would get a lot of use out of this. Available in pink polka dot also.
Fortnum & Mason Eau de Nil and Navy Blue Picnic rug – £52.50
Picnic in style on this beautiful tartan picnic blanket from Fortnum and Mason. Simply gorgeous pattern of Eau de Nil in a subtle navy and grey and comes with leather strap handles. Be careful when washing as the material is a wool composite.
Sunnylife Beach and Picnic Blanket – £53.00
This is one of those picnic blankets that is perfect for day at the beach, all thanks to the material which is polyester and therefore easy to shake off the sand and sea. It comes with its own zipped bag with carry handles and there are several different patterns available.
Atlantic Blankets British Wool Picnic Blanket – £110.00
Made in Cornwall and using the softest British wool you can imagine, this picnic blanket comes with gorgeous contrasting dark leather carry straps that perfectly compliment the cream and grey striped pattern. If you want a luxurious blanket that is soft and thick then it is worth forking out a little extra for this one. It can be carried or strapped to a bicycle or backpack and there are five colours available.
BEG Bicycles Picnic Rug and Leather Saddle Straps – £119.00
Surely the prettiest of all our picnic blankets, this one is made using 100% pure lamb’s wool, so it won’t be easy to wash it but the gorgeous colours and pattern make up for that. Soft wool with fringing in a pretty pink hued tartan that comes with its own real leather carry straps that will also fix onto the front or back of a bicycle. This company uses family firms to make the straps in the Lake District and the wool is woven in mills in County Tipperary in Ireland.
