Years ago mascaras all pretty much looked and did the same. They had the same shaped wand and they coated your eyelashes with product. Fast forward a few decades and this classic make-up item has changed drastically. Sure, the wand and product are still there but the brush is different and the actual mascara performs in many different ways.
There are products that do not clump, that allow the application of several layers, and brushes that separate lashes with others that pick up even the tiniest ones.
To see which new mascara would suit you best, scroll down and read our suggestions:
Some mascaras tend to be very wet when they come out of the tube and saturate the lashes, making it hard to build up volume. This product from Smith & Cult is not too thick and not too wet, just right and we found that one layer was enough for great coverage.

Another great product where one swipe of the brush is enough to coat all your lashes. A fully saturated formula that gives good colour and definition. Provides thick and lush lashes.

If subtle is not a word you like to use when describing your lashes then this mascara will suit you. Looks like you are wearing thick, false lashes when you apply this mascara, as the product can be layered to give a voluminous effect.

For those of us who prefer a more subtle look to their eyelashes and like defined but full lashes, Rimmel’s Endless Mascara is just the product. The wand separates each individual lash which is then coated by the product. Good product for daytime use.

For fans of the cat eye look, this product should catch your eye. The extended wand catches every last lash, including those tricky ones at the outer edges, making it perfect for that feline style. It is also available in three colours – black, chestnut brown and midnight blonde.

The wand is the exciting thing here, as it resembles a spiral staircase, twisting round on itself. This is so it catches every lash at 180 degrees and coats them in length and volume. Give your lashes two coats with this wand and you don’t get much fuller.

A great budget buy here that has a lovely thin brush to separate the lashes. There is little product build up on the wand so you can layer as much as you like and it dries on the lashes pretty quickly too.

Another brush that gives every lash a great coating here, similar to the Catrice wand, this one is an hourglass shape which works in the same manner by coating every side of the lash to add volume.

If you love to coat your lashes over and over again, there really is only one mascara that will do the job effectively – Covergirl’s formula does not stick or clump even after repeated applications so layer away!

The most high tech of our mascaras here from MAC, the brush actually curves so it acts just like an eyelash curler before you apply the product. You can use it with a straight brush but why would you?!
