I never used to think much of hand blenders until my sister gifted me an old one she didn’t use anymore. Since that auspicious day, I have found dozens of reasons to reach back into my dusty kitchen cupboards, take out the hand blender, unravel the cord and plug it in.
From blitzing soups to making delicious gravies, sauces and smoothies, hand blenders take up less space than food processors and often come with handy attachments, so there are many reasons to buy one.
Here are our favourites:
A basic hand blender set that comprises of the blender, a whisk and a chopping bowl. The hand blender has two speeds and there is also a 700ml measuring cup included. All the parts can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
This is the hand blender my sister gave me and I have to say that it is very robust, feels heavy in the hand and is good quality. The blades whizz round nicely, chop finely and do not splash food all over the place. It has two speeds, low and fast and the blender end twists off easily for washing.
A hand blender set similar to the one from Wilko but much better quality. It comes with two attachments, a chopping bowl and a whisk and you get a blending beaker as well. Has two speeds and stainless steel parts.
A simple to use hand blender here that just does the basics. It has one speed and comes with a small blending jug. The sort of hand blender that is ideal for one person who loves breakfast smoothies.
Most hand blenders have a power wattage of 400, this one is 750 and has a turbo setting. We like the stainless steel exterior and the way you alter the speed, by turning a dial on the top. Pretty nifty we think.
This hand blender has eight speeds, and goes faster the harder you press the button on the outside. It comes with an array of accessories, including a potato masher, a blending beaker and a chopping bowl. The actual hand blender itself has an anti-splash head.
This hand blender comes with a bag to keep in all the accessories, which include a whisk attachment, chopping bowl and blending jug. It has a powerful 800 watt motor which whizzes through meat and veggies in seconds. The speed is controlled by a dial on the top.
This contemporary looking hand blender has a patented anti-suction wand and comes with a chopping bowl with blades, a balloon whisk and measuring jug. Has 700 watts and parts are BPA free and dishwasher safe.
A very powerful motor of 1000 watts means that this hand blender is going to whizz through just about everything you chuck at it, but it is the assortment of attachments that we love. You get six, including a masher, whisk, grinder, chopper, and a soup Pro attachment. The masher has two different screens for fine and coarse mashing, whereas the blades travel through three different paths to give exceptional cutting. It’s expensive but you could do away with a food processor if you had one of these.
This comes with five variable speeds and is cordless, meaning you are not tethered to the wall when you are blitzing. Does take a while to charge however (three hours) so not a spur of the moment kind of gadget. Comes in three colours – red (shown), cream or silver. Included are three interchangeable stainless steel blades, a whisk and a mini food-chopper.
