With the emphasis on healthy eating and taking care of our bodies, many people are looking for alternative ways of cooking. If you can’t bear to give up the chips and fried stuff but want a better way of cooking then an air fryer is a great option.
Air fryers cook food with a combination of very little fat and hot air, hence the name. The problem is that some have a pretty poor reputation and can leave your food soggy with no crisp on the outside.
If you are cooking to buy an air fryer there are some factors you should consider.
- How big is your family and what capacity of air fryer do you therefore need?
- How big is the actual air fryer in terms of the amount of space it will take up?
- Do you just want a chip fryer or one that cooks in different ways such as grilling or roasting?
- Do you want to be able to cook different foods at the same time?
- Are the parts dishwasher safe and if not, how easy is it to clean?
Once you have decided what kind of air fryer you want you can look at our top recommendations:
Airfryer with Removable Basket 4L – £35.00
This is a great bargain at only £35, which is the standard price, not reduced, it comes with a massive 4 litre capacity non-stick pot that is large enough for a family of four. It fries, bakes, roasts and as the basket is removable it is easy to clean. You can make two different things at once thanks to the dual-capacity function and you can cook anything from chips to cakes to curries. Also has an adjustable 30-minute timer which turns off the air fryer automatically.
Tower AirWave Low Fat Air Fryer – £49.99
This air fryer has a huge 17 litre capacity which makes it ideal for larger families. It comes with two baskets that work to keep the food off the bottom of the fryer and prevent it sticking. It fries, roasts, bakes and grills and uses 80% less fat than conventional fryers. Comes with a recipe book to help get you started and even cooks from frozen.
Vonshef 2.2L – £57.99
We like this modern-looking device that comes with a clear lid so you can watch your food cooking and a digital display. Not the largest air fryer with a capacity of just 2.2 litres which will cook up to 800 grams of food, it would suit a couple or single person that want a smaller machine that won’t take up too much space on the work surface. Fried food was not as crisp on the outside as other more expensive machines but it is much easier to wash.
Salter EK2205 Healthy Digital Hot – £99.13
If you are the type of person that hates to read the instructions on new devices and just want an easy to operate device then this is the one for you. Comes with an automatic shut-off, an easy to read LCD display and a capacity of 4.5 litres. Lovely and quiet when in operation and really easy to clean but again, fried food not as crispy on the outside as we would like. Quite a heavy-weight machine so best kept out in the kitchen rather than storing it away every few days.
DeLonghi Multifry Young – £94.99
This is one of the fastest air fryers on our list as it takes only 30 minutes to cook a batch of chips, but you do have to keep stirring them. They come out lovely and crispy however so it is worth the effort. Will cook up to 1.5 litres of food and can be used to cook fish, meat and much more. We like the viewing window too and the bowl, paddle and basket are all removable for easy cleaning.
NuWave Brio Digital – £118.18
This has only just reached our UK shores having been a huge success in the states. It has a slightly different air heating technology which works from both the bottom and the top to ensure even cooking throughout. It also circulates air all around the basket which crisps up food beautifully. A good option if you want to swap frying for a healthier alternative and will use it often.
Breville VDF122 Halo+ – £150.00
This is one of those air fryers that you do need to stir on a regular basis but the results are amazing. Juicy food on the inside and perfectly crisped on the outside, it uses just half a tablespoon of oil and hot air and will easily cook up to 1.25kg of food. Very quiet to operate and dishwasher safe.
Philips Viva Collection HD9621 – £179.99
This machine can fry, bake, roast and grill and comes with an 800 gram capacity which is enough for a small family. Lovely crispy chips that are soft on the inside and includes a recipe book. We like the smaller design which makes it ideal for sitting on a kitchen work surface.
Tefal Actifry 2 in 1 low fat fryer – £199.99
This is the machine that you probably automatically think of when considering air fryers. It can cook two things at once thanks to the second compartment and has a capacity of 1.5kg. A little bit noisy to operate and be careful as the top can get a bit hot to touch.
Tefal Actifry Express XL – £229.99
For larger than average families you can’t go wrong with this XL machine. It has really easy controls and cooks loads of different types of food. This is the largest of our air fryers so be warned it will take up a lot of space.
