Six of the Best Waterproof Mascaras

Shop Well for less

Most of the time on Shoppersbase we carry out our own research, however, last week I was watching the BBC programme Shop Well For Less with Alex Jones and Steph McGovern.

The canny duo were helping the Williams family cut back on their spending each month.

One of the areas in which they spent the most money was make-up for Katy Williams, and so the pair decided to test waterproof mascaras to see if there were cheaper products available that did the job as well as the more expensive ones.

In order to test the waterproof mascaras, a team of synchronised swimmers applied the product and then underwent a ten-minute training session in the pool.

The waterproof mascaras tested were:

  • Boots Natural Collection – £1.99
  • Rimmel Scandal Eyes – £6.99
  • Maybelline Lash Sensational – £7.99
  • L’Oréal False Lash Architect 4D – £10.99
  • Givenchy Noir Couture – £25.00
  • By Terry Mascara Terrybly – £33.50

So which one came out on top? When reviewing the waterproof mascaras, comments were noted from both the swimmers, their coach and a make-up artist, who gave their own opinions.

Here are the results:

Six of the Best Waterproof Mascaras

L’Oréal False Lash Architect 4D - £10.99

The swimmer was really impressed with this mascara and said that it had ‘stayed on really well’. The tester said that she would definitely buy it. Application was really good and after the ten minute session in the pool the mascara had stayed on extremely well with no smudging.

As for the product, it is said to give a 4D effect thanks to the sculpting fibres and the special brush. The product comes in three kinds, waterproof black, black and brown.

Rimmel Scandal Eyes - £6.99

For the price, the swimmer who tested this product was really impressed. It did not smudge and lasted well in the pool session.

The product uses a collagen and keratin formula to add length and volume. It is available in black, extreme black and waterproof black.

Available from Superdrug.com

Maybelline Lash Sensational - £7.99

Not a bad product for the price, a little light on application and a fairly good product as it gave value for money.

As for the product, the special brush captures the tiniest of lashes and coats them with an intense black liquid mascara. Comes in intense black or black.

Available from Boots.com

Givenchy Noir Couture - £25.00

The swimmer who tested this mascara said that she couldn’t see any mascara left after the swimming session, and the coach and make-up artist agreed that it had all ‘come away in the water’.

This is a four-in-one product that thickens, strengthens, volumizes and curves using a special brush and an expert formula.

By Terry Mascara Terrybly - £33.50

This mascara did not do terribly well (thanks, I’m here all week). Testers said that they were very disappointed with this product and one remarked that if ‘she was in the water for any longer she would look a little bit ridiculous at the end with the amount of smudge’. Another swimmer said that she couldn’t believe the price and she definitely would not buy it.

As for the product, By Terry uses carbon-black micro-pigments in the mascara to create a water-resistant cloak around each eyelash which also thickens, lengthens and separates.

Boots Natural Collection - £1.99

When this was applied the testers said it felt a little clumpy but then were surprised on how long it had lasted in the pool.

The blurb on the sales page states that this mascara does not budge or smudge but very little was left on the testers eyelashes after the pool session. Comes in black or brown/black.
