Simple Tips on Buying a Patio Umbrella

A patio umbrella is very useful most especially in homes that receive harsh sunlight during summers.  The patio gives us a space where our family can gather and relax together.  However, when there is too much sun during summer time, it can be a very hot place to be in.  Patio umbrella comes handy because they come in large sizes that can cover the table and chairs that we put in our decks.  When winter comes and we want more sunlight to come in, we can simply fold the umbrella and store it in our garage until the next time that we will need it.

If you are planning to buy a patio umbrella for your home, here are a few tips that will come in handy.  The first thing you have to remember is that when it comes to umbrellas, size really matters.  Remember that the sun moves around and the shadow cast by the umbrella will move around with it.  This means that a bigger umbrella will give a bigger shade.  The next thing that you have to consider is the height of the umbrella.  If you are inserting it through a table, check the table’s height first.  You don’t want an umbrella that is so short that you have to duck while sitting down just to get under its shade.  If you live in a place where summer breezes are a bit strong, make sure that the umbrella can be secured to the ground.  Consider also the material from which the umbrella is made.  If you want to be prepared for rains, get an umbrella that is made from PVC or other water-proof materials.

A patio umbrella that is constantly being moved might give in to wear and tear.  Consider the durability of the umbrella and the portability if you are planning to bring it from one place to another.  Before buying a unit, have the salesman demonstrate how the umbrella can be set up.  Some units have complicated systems that involve ropes, pulleys and other parts.  You may consider buying a simpler yet equally strong umbrella if you think you’ll have a hard time setting up and dismantling the unit.

Maintenance is another factor that you have to consider when buying umbrellas.  Make sure that you clean both the pole and the cover of the umbrella.  If bad weather is coming up, fold the umbrella first and store it so you can ensure its long life.  Store the umbrella upright and not on the ground to keep it in top condition.  At the end of the day, your patio umbrella is like any home furniture – it will serve you for a long time as long as you take care of it properly.
