Severe Weather Preparations

Here in the UK, severe weather is not quite as common as it is across the Atlantic. With Hurricane Katia making its way over to us right now and with occasional flooding, however, it is a good idea to have some sort of plan for when severe weather is likely to occur. You’ll be able to avoid trouble and deal with the resultant problems. You’ll also feel a lot less like panicking as you’ll have a plan of action in place.

One thing to always keep in stock is a set of candles and a lighter. You will be able to deal with power outages in a romantic setting. However, especially if you have kids or pets, which may not be trustworthy around open flames, you will definitely need to make sure you have electric torches and plenty of batteries. Wind-up torches are an economic option, allowing you to light your way by squeezing the handle or wind a hand-crank. While there is nothing wrong with a set of battery-lit torches, you’ll need to make absolutely sure you have an alternative option just in case you run out before the power outage is resolved.

Canned foods are a great idea, especially ones that need no cooking. You’ll be able to stock up on plenty of food that will work in case of an emergency – just ensure you have a tin opener handy that isn’t electric in nature. Making sure you have this type of food in stock at all times means you never have to worry about food supplies in the event of a problem like this.

Make sure you have plenty of spare blankets, duvets and other items to keep you all warm during the day and at night. You’ll need to be sure everyone can get the right amount of rest despite the issues.

There are plenty of gadgets allowing you to charge your mobile phone either from a set of batteries or even your car. This can be important in case of an emergency, especially if you’re one of the many people who no longer have a landline.

Television, gaming consoles and other such items are heavily relied on for entertainment nowadays. You’ll want to make sure you have plenty of things to do; books, magazines, board games and other such items can help keep you and your family entertained for the duration.

Severe weather can strike at any time, and while of course it won’t be the end of the world, being prepared will allow you to make sure you and your family live through it with a minimum of fuss.
