Roadkill is a novel designer toy company but with a macabre twist. Described as ‘anti-toys’ by the company, Roadkill toys are exactly what you would expect. Flattened hedgehogs, squashed racoons and runover rabbits, Roadkill toys are certainly not designed for children, but if you have a particular sense of humour, you might see the unique side.
First there was Twitch the Raccoon, then there was Grind the Rabbit, then Splodge the Hedgehog, then Pop the Weasel. Now it’s Smudge the Squirrel’s turn to take his place in the headlights.
The Roadkill toys all have one thing in common, they have all been victims of a road accident and they all lie in a pool of their own eviscera. You’ll be pleased to know however that their organs, cracked ribs, intestines, blood are all stuffed, and it’s a new type of stuffing that squidges out when you squeeze it, which gives it a more realistic effect. And Smudge doesn’t just lie there like your average roadkill. He’s an interactive toy. You can take the blood and guts in and out. They’re sealed into the carcass by a zip on his back. Just unzip and let the blood and gore ooze out.
Smudge comes in a body bag. This keeps him fresh and maggot-free. It’s made of a transluscent plastic, so you can make out the macabre details inside. And attached to his twitching paw is an identity tag, telling you all you need to know about the story of Smudge’s sticky end.
All Roadkill toys come with blood-soaked Death Certificates and Bumper Stickers proclaiming ‘I love Roadkill’.
Roadkill Toys was established in the Spring of 2005 in West London, Shepherds Bush. The guys that founded Roadkill used to spend their youth photographing roadkill (who didn’t?) and made artworks out of splatted furry animals. Putting two and two together, and realising a huge gap in the cuddly toy market, they came up with Squash-plush. Teddies that have been run over.
A few prototypes and samples were tested before they were happy with the first character in their Squash-Plush range. Twitch the Raccoon. The rest is road history.
Roadkill toys range in price from £15 for a Pop the Weasel door stop to £25 for a cuddly toy.
