It’s her birthday today, and you’d think she’d be celebrating and having a well-earned day off with some of her closest chums. Not so the Bardadian singer Rihanna, who took to Twitter today to tweet her news of a brand new collaboration with MAC cosmetics. The 25 year-old songstress is calling her new collection Riri Hearts MAC, and word on the street is that one of the items will feature a red lipstick that ‘works on every skin tone.’
Rihanna is one busy lady as she has only just completed her first clothing collection for high street brand River Island. She impressed the fashion industry critics with her edgy take on pieces inspired from her own wardrobe. And to show that she really does have plans to take over the entire world, she tweeted today: ‘That’s right baby, I’m a #MACgal now! Get into it, package designed and products created from scratch by yours truly!’
In an interview with WWD, the singer explained in more detail, why she wanted to get involved with the cosmetics company: “Being creative is something that I love. So I can put that into different outlets. My make-up looks, my fashion looks…they help me to express myself as an artist.”
RiRi Hearts MAC will be divided into four different collections, all personally created by Rihanna, and will include eye shadow palettes, false lashes and RiRi Woo, the singer’s take on the perfect red lipstick. It is thought that each individual product collection will tie in with Rihanna’s concerts and touring dates.
The singer has long been a fan of MAC cosmetics, and spoke of her love of the brand to WWD, saying that for her to get involved with the brand was a ‘no brainer’: “I’ve been using MAC on tour for such a long time it was a natural fit for me. When you think of make-up, the brand that pops into your mind – for something legit – is MAC,” she added: “Whatever color you want, it’s like “Let’s go to MAC.”
Fans who have trouble matching a red lipstick to their skintone will be pleased to learn that the first product to launch from the RiRi Hearts MAC collection will be RiRi Woo – a blue-red matte lipstick inspired by the star’s favorite MAC shade. This is set to be sold in May in pop-up shops at the singer’s Diamonds Tour concerts. All Rihanna products will come with exclusive packaging and be embossed with RiRi’s signature.
RiRi Hearts MAC will feature three other collections, summer, fall and holiday, which will all include the signature red lipstick.
Although MAC cosmetics are well-known for their celebrity collaborations, having previously launched ranges using stars such as Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga, this is the first time the company has taken a famous person for a simple one-off collaboration.
As for how much input the singer had into the creation of the products, the cosmetics company did point out that although Rihanna had a significant role in designing the line, they preferred to call her a ‘creative partner’ rather than a designer.
John Demsey, the group president of MAC’s parent company Estee Lauder Cos. Inc, told WWD: “This was not a front. These four collections are like four tracks on a Rihanna compilation. Each one has its own vibe, look, special make-up packaging and flavor.”
And it seems that the singer took her role as creative partner very seriously, as she even got some of her girlfriends to help with the colour of the lipstick: “Working with MAC, it’s difficult to get a red lipstick that beats Ruby Woo, because it works on every skin tone,’ she explained. “I got to pick one that worked, and I tried it on all my friends to make sure it worked on all of our skin tones,” she said.
