Okay so we are still hoping for some summer weather here in the UK, but if you are anything like me, as soon as a label showcases their next season’s collection, you are more than keen to have a sneaky peek. So when we heard that budget fashion retailer Primark had just released pictures of their new AW13 range, we just had to have a look and report back.
First, the good. Primark have a reputation for leading the high street, when it comes to edgy, straight from the catwalk pieces, and in some respects, they have captured this well with their new autumn and winter collection.
There are gorgeous tartan mini dresses with Peter Pan collars, very reminiscent of Chanel, there are big baggy Crombie-esque coats, some of which feature a mix of fabric, using leather and wool replicas which we love, paisley trousers in leaf green – a sure favourite for the autumn, and body fitting dresses that owe more than a nod to Victoria Beckham’s signature frocks.
There is a definite rock and grunge feel to other pieces, incorporating a glam edge that has been a major theme on this season’s catwalks, including Moschino, with rock chick tops and skirts all featuring exposed zips and in imitation leather.
What we don’t like are the 80’s style sweatshirts, featuring cheap looking fabrics and prints, the nondescript jumpers in odd hues for the season, and frankly the jewellery is uninspiring. It really is a collection of two halves.
On the one hand, you have the cook biker grunge styles, with Rihanna type exposed leatherette bras, pencil skirts in textured leather and biker ankle boots, but on the other hand there is a strange addition of the throw-back sweatshirt, not what we would ever consider to be a fashion staple in anyone’s wardrobe.
So if you are window shopping for some new autumn and winter gear and fancy heading over to Primark, this is what we recommend.
The coats – Big and baggy enough so that you can wrap up warm inside, Primark have designed cosy winter coats that will come in a variety of shades and styles. Choose from rosy pinks or bright colour popping reds.
The dresses and trousers – In tartan and paisley, which we always love around this time of year, and subtle colour blocking in greys, blacks and whites, Primark’s dresses can be corporate for the office, or even glammed up for a night out, whilst we love the subtle patterning on the trousers.
Shoes, boots and bags – If you are a fan of strappy heels in gorgeous autumnal colours then you’ll love the new range from Primark which start at an amazing £12. Choose from monochrome styles or animal print, but hurry, as we think these are going to be a definite success.
From the super suede shopping totes, to the mini clutch bags, Primark have become our favourite bag designer of this year, beating out previous fav River Island by a mile. And if you fancy the latest catwalk fashion of cut out biker ankle boots, then remember to set a date in your calendar for autumn, as the budget brand will be releasing a variety of styles and colours in this design.
Leather – Or rather pleather or PU, Primark have added this fabric to many of their pieces, bringing them bang up to date and in line with a lot of catwalk and designer styles. Expect to see leather additions on dresses, coats and skirts and top made entirely of this innovative textile.
The Primark AW13 range will be available in shops later this year.
