If you have been following the delectably saucy TV chef Nigella Lawson on Twitter recently, you will already know that she has been tweeting tips and photos of what she has been eating at home, which may account for her staggering weight loss, seeing her drop several dress sizes from a size 16 to a 12. Many of her fans were wondering what her secret was and rumour has it that she followed the Clean & Lean Diet. But her Twitter account has proved to reveal more than just social musings as she has shown her fans a simple, but effective formula of decreasing size portions and basically eating a little bit less than usual. The once voluptuous chef said in an interview, “I love food and I love cooking so therefore I never deprive myself.” But it appears she is doing just that in an attempt to get the pounds off and boy is it working!
Known famously for her curvaceous figure as much for her love of calorie laden food, Nigella has a new TV programme on BBC2 at present which features recipes from her Italian background called Nigellissima. The show has included a fabulously rich chocolate hazelnut cheesecake packed with an enormous 7,000 calories. The 52 year’s new slimline figure seems a little at odds with the recipes she is providing for her audience as the British Dietetic Association commented on the amount of calories in her hazelnut cheesecake and calculated that her ice-cream in brioche contained 2,144 calories. Meanwhile, over on Twitter, Nigella is giving her 218,000 or so followers quite different culinary tips. For instance, last Monday, she tweeted a picture of her lunch which consisted of just two slices of rye toast with hummus and fresh coriander, describing as a ‘meagre’ meal ‘but delicious all the same’.
Whilst last Thursday she dined on a single avocado with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of salt and several days before that she just had to satisfy her hunger with a ‘baby bear’s – bowl of porridge with maple syrup to tide me over till chicken comes out of oven’. She does seem to love her avocados as on August 31, she tweeted a picture of another avocado lunch with the caption: ‘I know it’s late, but this is the lunch I wanted: a rhapsody in green; well worth waiting for.’ Hmm, I don’t think two halves of an avocado would satisfy me!
Although Nigella has never admitted to following any kind of diet, if would appear from her frequent tweetingS that she could be adhering to a low GI plan, which helps to keep hunger pangs at bay by releasing energy slowing and steadily throughout the day. So if she does indulge in a steak, she will only have four chips with it. GI refers to the Glycaemic Index – and foods that are low GI break down slowly and help to control appetite by making you feel full for longer.
Nigella appears to be swapping her calorie laden foods with GI foods, such as opting for chicken with green beans and sushi rice rather than roast potatoes. However, she doesn’t always restrict herself, as during a trip to the US last month, she cooked herself a large portion of barbecued pork belly as she needed ‘sustenance’ for the long flight. Nigella has always said that if she ever lost a lot of weight she ‘would age ten years straightaway’. We think she looks absolutely fabulous, and it seems her fans and Twitter followers agree.
