She may not have had the best 2013, with a very public marriage breakdown and divorce, and a humiliating court case to contend with, but Nigella Lawson has proved that she still has some serious selling clout. The TV chef is appearing in a new US cooking show – The Taste, and as soon as pictures emerged of her with her co-judges, wearing a striking blue ‘50’s style dress, it sold out.
The Midhurst Dress costs £85 and is usually available in sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL and in an assortment of colours ranging from black, blue, red and purple. But after Nigella wore the dress on the first episode of The Taste, the figure hugging frock, which was designed by British fashion house Diva Catwalk, sold out instantly.
Demand has been so great for the dress that the company has had to issue a statement on their website to let customers know that it will not be available until January 15th.
It must be pleasing for Nigella to know that she still has her legion of female fans that want to emulate her, after her disastrous year in 2013. The TV chef faced allegations of cocaine use from her then husband, the art tycoon Charles Saatchi, who was pictured by the press with his hands around her throat in a public restaurant.
And she also had to contest allegations regarding her PA’s, Italian sisters Francesca and Elisabetta Grillo, who were accused of committing fraud while they worked for Nigella. The sisters spent around £300,000 on taxis, flights and clothes but said that the overspending on the company credit cards was allowed, so long as they kept Nigella’s alleged cocaine use a secret. The PA’s were found not guilty last year, but Nigella still has to wait and see whether the police will want to press charges over the supposed cocaine use.
In the meantime, Nigella can rest assured that whatever her personal life throws up, in her public life she is still very much a trend setter, and has the power to sell out what could be described as quite an ordinary, if not dated looking dress. The dress has a very 50’s style to it, which does tend to suit Nigella, with her voluptuous curves and size 14 figure. On a skinnier girl however, I doubt if the dress would have the same wow factor.
This is of course, not the first time Nigella has caused a selling frenzy with her choice of clothing. She wore a famous red ‘wiggle dress’ from the vintage boutique store Deadly Is The Female, situated in Frome in Somerset. The dress was called ‘The Billion Dollar Babe’ and cost £175 and the store was inundated with calls after Nigella tweeted details of the dress to her followers.
Nigella does tend to stick with designers that she knows suit her, and returned to Diva after wearing the New Chevy Pencil Dress £125, in a Christmas special. Other celebrities who love the Diva designs are Carol Vorderman and Lorraine Kelly.
