With Fathers Day just around the corner, many of us will plump for the same old gift of aftershave or eau de cologne and perhaps choosing a scent for someone else is fraught with problems. But with so many gorgeous, fresh new colognes out there, maybe it is time to drag your dad away from his typical spritz of Old Spice and turn him towards the exciting blends of spring and summer. I’m sure he’ll thank you for it.
You cannot beat Chanel for a classic Eau de Cologne and luckily for us, they have released a smaller bottle of their famous lemon and citrus spray from £100. This fresh, bracing scent incorporates top notes of Neroli and Bergamot with a seductive interplay of herbs and spices and was created by Chanel Master Perfumer Jacques Polge in 2007. Available from all good perfumeries.
Aqua di Parma Colonia is a gorgeous smelling blend of Sicilian citrus fruits and flower essences, from crisp English lavender to verbena and Bulgarian rose with the warm notes of vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli. The top notes include bergamot, citrus, lemon, bitter orange, sweet orange and you are left with base notes of sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver and vanilla. Available now in a travel size of 50ml for £45 and if you buy from Harrods, they are currently offering an engraving service for the limited edition bottle.
Prada’s Amber Rose Pour Homme also has bergamot as a top note, and was created by the famous grand daughter of the perfumier who wanted to invent a perfume as if she was a man. She created the cologne in four notes, amber – the main accord, rich and complex oriental base which includes amber, vanilla, labdanum, tonka and patchouli; fougere – the aromatic accord with a remarkable soapy note, includes notes of pelargonium, vetiver, orange blossom and myrrh at the heart; cologne – the refreshing citrusy top of bergamot, mandarin, neroli and cardamom; and finally leather – leather note is present at the base of the composition ( leather, saffron and sandalwood). Available from thefragranceshop.co.uk for a 100ml spray at £54.50 but you get a free 10ml EDT spray included.
Finally, for pure indulgence, check out Christian Dior’s Cologne Royale Eau de Toilette retailing at a cool £120 from Selfridges. Cologne Royale was part of a new collection from November 2010 and is an exceptional Cologne, inspired by the Royal Courts of the 18th century, of which Mr. Dior was so fond. “An exercise for a Perfumer, wherein the quality of a fragrance entirely depends on the quality of its ingredients, and its citrus fruits, in particular.” says perfumer Francois Demachy. With notes of bergamot, lemon, neroli, mint and sandalwood. Your dad has never smelt so good!
