It is certainly not the healthiest of fast foods snacks, in a time where fast foods outlets are trying to introduce low fat options to their clientele, but Dunkin Donuts have decided to buck the trend and are launching the whopping fat buster of a breakfast sandwich.
The new glazed donut breakfast sandwich is not for the faint hearted among diners, as it contains fried eggs, bacon, all sandwiched in between one of their famous glazed dunkin donuts. The sandwich clocks in at a massive 360 calories, and will be part of the national menu, starting from June 7, which coincidentally just happens to be National Donut Day.
Dunkin Donuts had previously test run the breakfast sandwich in selected outlets across eastern Massachusetts in April, and the introduction of the new sandwich proved to be a huge success, with many happy customers posting their views online in social media accounts.
The Dunkin’ Donuts company, which also owns Baskins Robbins, is based in Canton, Massachusetts, and has seen the rise of more healthier options form a substantial part of their profits recently, with younger patrons preferring low fat options to the fat laden offerings of norm. Typically products such as whole grain bread with egg whites have replaced the higher calorific options by people in their 20s and 30s, who appear to want not only healthier, but fresher food.
And statistics prove this, as a report by the Hudson Institute earlier this year, found that a key indicator of growth at fast food restaurants came from lower-calorie options between 2006 and 2011. Fast food chains that incorporated such low fat options saw their customer footfall rise by 11%, and more importantly, those that didn’t lost an estimated 15% of customer traffic.
However, there seems to be several innovations that buck this trend of wanting fresh, low calorie food. New products, whether they contain a high level of fat of sugar always create a buzz around them, as they are discussed on social media and word of mouth takes them to a popular high. A case in point is the Doritos Locos Tacos by Tacos Bell, who say that this launch was their most successful item ever, increasing sales in some restaurants 8 percent last year.
And it appears that having a unique choice is also a popular option, where customers can handpick ingredients to go into their sandwich, and customize it to their particular taste. For instance, choosing a certain type of bagel or sandwich or filling, and knowing that the restaurant will have that option available to you is a huge boost.
Stan Frankenthaler, executive chef and vice president of product innovation at Dunkin’ Donuts, realizes that choice is a major factor in customer satisfaction, and said the chain’s recent introduction of the new glazed breakfast sandwich was in keeping with the store’s goal of offering a wide variety to its customers.
