The big word in jeans is style. By that I mean the right style. Because every jean is supposed to flatter, to make you feel good, to match your personality and the way you want the world to see you. And because every body shape is different, there are hundreds of variations on the theme – straight cut, skinny leg, boot cut, flare.
So I’ve put together a few of my favourite looks for this year’s denim diva:
Straight leg fits.
The straight leg jean is elegant and classic, with a relaxed knee fit, a higher rise at the waist and therefore a longer overall leg. Straight leg jeans are perfect for casual everyday wear and are “figure neutral” – that is apart from slightly lengthening the leg they don’t emphasise or change your proportions greatly.
The bootcut jean.
Bootcut jeans, ever popular in the 70s, are back. They have a lower rise on the hip, which makes the upper body look longer than it really is. And they flare out from the knee to accommodate your sexiest boots. The result is a jean that you can wear equally on the beach or at the rock show!
Real flares are designed to transform the body shape by slimming the hips, making the legs look longer and accentuating the backside. The overall effect is of legs that don’t stop no matter who you are or where you are. Make sure when you buy flared jeans that the pockets are in the right place or the effect is lost – for accentuation of the bum the back pocket should finish just under the curve of the buttock. Pockets placed higher up give you more of a classic “peach shape” – just be aware what difference they can make!
Slouch look jeans.
A real modern classic, the slouchy fit jean really recalls that 80s “artist in residence look” – making you look like you’ve just stepped out of Warhol’s studio for a quick drink. Slouch fits in full length jeans and shorts are all about showing a bit of leg – just above the ankle for the full length version, and from the mid-thigh downwards in the short. Slouchy jeans are hung from the hips and are loose without being baggy, casual’s more the word. They’re perfect for the boyish look.
“Cropping” refers to finishing the jean on or above the ankle as opposed to down below the ankle or at the floor. Cropped jeans look wonderful on naturally long legs – and can also accentuate the length of less long legs by making the jean look comparatively small against the frame of the body. They’re an ideal style jean, perfect for wearing in smart casual situations where either flats or heels are called for,
The jeans you wear of course are ultimately dictated by your own personal style. It’s just nice to know there’s denim for everyone once you know what to look for! From rockin the free world 70s style to the modern creative nomad, there’s a look suitable for every girl…
