We are now used to seeing the Duchess of Cambridge wearing High Street clothing but when it comes to our favourite celebrities, you don’t see it that much, especially at top notch events such as The Brits. But last night, Sir Philip Green’s daughter – Chloe, was the latest in a long line of ladies who have worn one particular dress for an A List red carpet do. I’m talking about the new collection from Mary Katrantzou for Topshop.com which includes this gorgeous dress, priced at a cool £350.
And I’m guessing, as Sir Green is still owns the store, that she certainly did not pay full price for it! So who else has been spotted in the Mary Katrantzou dress? Well Alesha Dixon wore the very same one at the audtions of Britains Got Talent; model Poppy Delevigne wore the dress to saunter down the red carpet at the Elle Style Awards which occured earlier on this month and reality TV star Made In Chelsea’s Amber Atherton wore it when she graced London Fashion Week, earlier on this week. But this is actually the second time Chloe has donned the dress, having first worn it to a reception to Downing Street no less, whilst accompanying her famous father to celebrate British Fashion. It clearly is one of her favourites.
Unfortunately for the rest of us, who may have had a few hundred quid locked away, just for spending on an iconic dress, it has now typically sold out. And if you go to the Topshop.com website, under Mary Katrantzou for Topshop, all you’ll see is a pair of colourful leggings and a scarf. All very nice but not what we were looking for. The Greek designer in question is obviously very happy that her designs are having celebrity endorsements, commenting, “It’s very exciting to work with Topshop for our third range together.
They’ve been so supportive of my work from the very beginning and this range will be the most ambitious one we’ve done and the most fun! My idea behind the collaboration was to design for the Topshop girl a range that is as close to the aesthetic of my mainline as possible, with great control over the quality of design and production. I can’t wait to see the Topshop girls in the bowl dresses and for the most daring to see them try the print on print layering!”
Mary Katrantzou’s label has come along way since it was launched four years ago in 2008. Having studied at Rhode Island School of Design, she then transferred to Central St Martins where she completed her BA and then managed a MA in Textile Design. Topshop New Generation then sponsored her from their funding source and she launched her very own mainline collection during London Fashion Week for the last five seasons, winning the coveted Swiss Textile award last year and this year the UKTI award. The U.S editor for Vogue, the celebrated Anna Wintour has shown a special interest in her designs, as has Alexa Chung. But it seems that nothing can thrust a designer into the spotlight than a few celebrities actually wearing the dress, and then tweeting about it afterwards. As did Chloe, going into the Brit Awards, she was straight on her smart phone and tweeted, “Heading to the Brits wearing Mary Katrantizou. for @Topshop!! Looking forward to tonight! Xx” What a shame I had to spend that £300 I had spare on the rent….
