Personally I blame the Duchess of Cambridge for starting this new trend. Mind you, as the nights get colder it’s not a bad trend to have to follow, I’m talking about wearing a coat as the main focus of your outfit. Kate Middleton started this new style fashion when she began to wear coat dresses in the autumn by High Street brands such as Whistles, Hobbs and Orla Kiely. Since then, big name designers have caught on that this is one trend alert we wouldn’t mind following as who wants the hassle of taking off your coat when the temperature drops? So rather than using the traditional coat as a cover up for what is underneath, now coats are the focal point themselves and have all sorts of embellishments on them. We’ve chosen a few that we thought you might fancy in the run up towards Christmas:
Brooch and jewel-embellished crepe coat – $4,490
Consuelo Castiglioni has masterfully juxtaposed an elegant A-line silhouette with gobstopper crystal embellishment to create this crepe coat, the finale piece from Marni’s FW12 runway collection. Short pleated sleeves are accentuated with beautiful sequin and leather adornment, and pin brooches sit at the collar in place of buttons. Emulate the show styling and wear this trophy piece with heels and a clutch.
Embroidered wool-blend coat – $4,990
Valentino’s FW12 runway show was an enchanting affair, inspired by traditional folk costumes and brimming with ornate detail. This beautifully embroidered ivory wool and silk-blend coat was a standout piece and perfectly sums up the romantic mood. Do like the models and style yours with neutral accessories and swept-back hair, or add to the glamour with scarlet pumps and a gilded clutch.
Printed velvet coat – $5,250
FW12’s baroque trend is a return to opulence, and no brand embraces such timeless glamour like Versace. Printed with jewel-encrusted crosses, this velvet coat captures the look in a statement-making way, fusing Old World elegance with contemporary edge. Take a cue from the runway and team yours with mesh ankle boots and an oxblood clutch to finish.
Shearling and floral appliqué brocade coat – $15,995
Alexander McQueen’s head-turning coat is a beautiful way to make a statement this winter, and was one of our favorite designs to grace the FW12 runway. Typical of the label’s incredible craftsmanship, this intricate piece features a white-washed take on the season’s opulent brocade, carefully appliquéd flowers, a fabulous full skirt and, best of all, an optional shearling collar. This stunning creation was paired with a futuristic silver visor at the show, but metallic sandals and a stud-sprayed clutch will make it city-appropriate.
Lace-effect macramé coat – $2,870
An English woman in Paris was the inspiration behind Chloé’s FW12 collection, and this beautiful cream coat strikes the perfect balance between casual British appeal and polished Gallic glamour. Crafted from delicate lace-effect macramé, this carefully tailored piece falls on the smart side of slouchy – the loose-fitting cut effortlessly counterbalanced by the Swarovski pearls studded throughout. We loved the runway styling, so emulate the models and team it with a sleek clutch and ladylike heels.
Houndstooth crystal-embellished chiffon coat – $12,495
Lending the classic houndstooth motif a dazzling evening update, Emilio Pucci’s semi-sheer black mesh and chiffon evening coat is a true outfit transformer. Take your cue from the runway styling and wear this floor-sweeping, lightweight layer over streamlined staples to ensure it remains firmly in the fashion spotlight.
