Made.com – Handmade for You

I recently stumbled across Made.com, a website that specialises in a new way of selling furniture online. Their premise is ‘No warehouses. No fancy showrooms. No middlemen.’ So how do they manage to put together a collection of unique furniture at amazing prices without compromising on quality? The idea is relatively simple; Made.com find the best designers to create the furniture and then commission the best craftsmen to build it. But because they only manufacture what has been ordered at the end of every week, they manage to keep costs to a minimum which they then are able to pass on to the customer. CEO and cofounder Ning Li had the idea of selling in this way after her own personal experience of buying sofa for her flat. Having managed to source a sofa from the factory of a friend for a fifth of the price she normally should have paid for on the high street, she decided later on to start a business out of the idea, – by connecting consumers with factories, so they can also buy designer furniture directly from the furniture factories for a fraction of the high street prices. But it wasn’t easy for her. She wanted to put together the best team in order to get the necessary funding to start the company but needed the funding in place before she had the team. However, despite all the multiple challenges she and her team have faced, business is now bustling and going really well. Here at Shoppersbase, we love any company that introduces a new way of bringing quality products to the customer and we are sure that Made.com will continue in their well deserved success for a long time to come. Here are some of our favourite pieces from their current range, to give you a taste of what is on offer.

Bourbon Commode in Azur – £199

This was the first piece of furniture I came across on the Made website. A fresh take on a classic. With the graceful curves and slender legs of 18th century designs, but in an updated colour and finish. Made from distressed wood glazed in azur blue lacquer for a striking reclaimed look. This is a sophisticated accent storage piece. From the carpentry to the artisan finishing process, no detail has been overlooked. With finely engraved antiqued metal handles.

Fonteyn Dressing Table – £349

I’ve truly never seen anything like this contemporary dressing table. Inspired by a dancer’s poise, this compact table is elegantly balanced, with slender, tapered legs and gracefully curved edges. The high gloss red lacquer brings classic glamour, beautifully offsetting the matt finish walnut. Topped by a stylish round mirror. Despite its delicate looks, this is a sturdy and stable piece. Made from solid walnut with thick walnut veneer and red lacquer detail.

ME & U – £49

I really love this design. You see so many ‘LOVE’ products, to come across something different like this one is a real treat. This set of four typographic art prints is perfect for adding colour with a simple and decorative message. Created for Made.com by award-winning illustrator Lucinda Ireland. Hang them in a square or jumble them up. Printed onto a 100% cotton canvas, these are mounted onto sturdy engineered wood frames. They come in a set of four.

Animalia Zebra Cushion – £39

Seriously, I need two of these for my living room to go with my pink settee and aubergine rug! And you could use this cute companion cushion to liven up your look. The repeat print pop art style keeps it playful and adds a fun dose of colour pop. Featuring a bespoke woven pattern for a unique edge. Try pairing with the pug square cushion to double up on impact. Made in the UK. Made from fibre filling and high quality woven jacquard fabric. With the zebra print is on one side and berry red fabric on the other.

Juno Armchair – £399

There were so many gorgeous chairs to choose from but I settled on this one for its pure retro look and the fact that I love the colour. Make a bold statement in 1950s inspired seating. This bubble-shaped armchair looks great from all angles – in burnt orange for standout impact. With built-in cushioning on all sides and a deep seat, the sit is comfy and well supported. In soft linen mix fabric for a luxury look and feel. Crafted in the UK just for us with beautiful hand finished accent piping. The legs are solid wood and hand turned – oak finish.
