Liberty Collaboration with Dr Martens: Hit or Miss?

If you think of all things that are quintessentially English then Liberty prints must surely feature somewhere at the top. Contrast that with the bad boys of fashion and you get Dr Martens, the rock n roll of street wear. Adorned by Teddy Boys and Punks alike, how can these two British icons meet in the middle I asked myself when I heard about their recent collaboration? Pretty tiny flowers on heavy desert boots? Come on, that’s never gonna fly, but then the more I researched the more I read that back in the ’80’s, disenchanted youths were hand painting floral patterns on their boots, even before such styles ever featured on any official merchandise by DM. So it appears that the likelihood of these two British heritage brands – Dr Martens and Liberty coming together, was only a matter of time.

Evident is the fact that DM have had a good trawl through Liberty’s archives of iconic prints to come up with a ‘wild nature’ theme, choosing a bird-filled ‘Strawberry Thief’ print and a specially re-coloured ‘Martens Flower’ print especially to adorn their classic 3-hole and 8-hole shoes and boots, as well as their recently released desert and Kensington boot styles. They have also released a selection of satchels which are adorned in these same prints, and are available too. It is an exclusive 14 piece collection that will be available in London’s Liberty store on Great Marlborough Street, and online from May 1st.
