Well, it was surely only a matter of time before we started injecting our own blood into our faces, in a vain attempt to hold back the years. I mean, let’s face it, we’ve tried snake and bee venom, dragon’s blood and tree bark, squeezing vials of our own plasma into our sagging cheeks should come as no surprise.
And one lady who is no stranger to trying out new beauty regimes is the reality U.S. TV star – 32 year old Kim Kardashian, who posted this pretty gruesome picture up of herself, post treatment. Kim was filmed in the latest episode of “Kourtney and Kim Take Miami”, visiting a clinic that specialises in the new Vampire facials, where blood was taken from her arm and re-injected back into her face.
She screamed out: “Owww. Oh my God. I will never get a facelift if it feels like that.” Later that day, we were all treated to a picture on Twitter of her blood splatted face.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections
This new anti-ageing facial is called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, but is rapidly being known as the Vampire Blood Facial or Dracula Facial, and Hollywood A Listers are looking on in interest, as it is now becoming the fastest growing celebrity must have beauty treatment.
The way the PRP injections works is that some of your own blood is taken from you, then, using a specific device, that blood is then processed to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood. This means that you are then left with a concentrated form of a platelet rich compound that contains three to four times the levels found in your normal blood. This can then be injected back into any areas of your face that you want to be plumped up.
And the whole process is pretty quick too, as the separation of the platelets takes around 20 minutes on average, and then you simply have the time it takes to inject the clear platelet rich plasma back into the sagging areas.
Celebrities such as Ms Kardashian are raving about this new procedure, as it gives a much more realistic, and natural result, compared to say Botox injections, which can leave patients with a frozen looking face, or leave them looking permanently surprised, until the injection wears off. This is down to the fact that you are using your bodies own natural resources, and not injecting what is either a poison or as some fillers are – a man made chemical substance.
With PRP injections it is recommended that you have just one treatment every month for three months, and then this should be enough for the results to last for up to 18 months after that.
The procedure works well for people with concerns about anti-ageing, but also those who have bad scarring from acne or skin pot marks, and as the product is naturally derived, anyone who has concerns about using artifical compounds will also find it a good option.
PRP Injections are actually nothing new, and have been used in healing athletes wounds as far back as the early 1990’s. Here they would be injected into the damaged tissue, where the rich platelet blood would release growth factors that would assist cells that would help to repair the the abnormal tissues.
It was during this usage that other benefits were discovered, such as improved skin texture, decreased pain and very little side effects, that the PRP Injections procedure then started being adapted to beauty treatments.
