Jack Spade Brings Iconic US Style to London

In the States, the company Jack Spade have already built up a reputation of producing well made, stylish and functional basics and although we may not have heard that much of them over here, we soon will do. They are launching a new European store in London this week and will be delivering goods such as messenger bags, trench coats, shirts and watches nationwide. The company was formed by Andy Spade and his wife Kate and was based in their loft apartment in lower Manhatten. Their inspiration for Jack Spade was simple, to manufacture bags that were not considered boring but not overtly precious either.

They both believed that bags could be utilitarian and stylish and began to make messenger bags out of waxed cotton and heavy canvas. They made sure that the design was straightforward and functional and used materials that were timeless and long-lasting. As they wanted feedback on the durability of the bags, it occurred to them to sell the bags to people who use utility bags in their work. Therefore, the first Jack Spade bag was sold to a hardware store in 1997, and so it began. In 1999, Jack Spade opened their first store at 56 Greene Street in SoHo. The concept was travel bags, trench coats and general merchandise.

It was a modern haberdashery mixing found furniture, model rockets, vintage Playboys and classic products: Levi’s 501 jeans, Timex military watches, Lacoste tennis shirts and Mackintosh raincoats. Over time, Jack Spade took their reputation for well-made, functional and stylish products and applied it to clothing. They returned to the aesthetic of simple, purposeful design and sourced the best materials that improve with age and gain character with time, just like their bags. From the humble beginnings of working out of their loft space, today Jack Spade has 7 stores in the US and can be found situated in top department stores and speciality shops worldwide. The new London store is located at Jack Spade London, 83 Brewer St., London W1F9UX. In the meantime, here are a few items to give you a heads up of what sort of things they sell.
