The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton would no doubt make the perfect model for a clothing range, with her enviable figure, girl next door looks and likeable personality, some might say it is a match made in heaven.
Responsible for the ‘Kate Effect’, in which literally anything she wears sells out within hours, prompting a host of copycat pieces, so could we soon be seeing a fashion range from the Duchess?
Well, if a statement from St James’s Palace is to be believed, we could be buying clothes under the Kate Middleton name pretty soon.
The palace confirmed reports that the Duchess of Cambridge has trademarked her name so it can be used on “clothing, footwear and headgear” in the future. And Look magazine gave the heads up on how she might be feeling with the new moniker of ‘fashion icon’, since she has entered the public domain.
They said: “Kate loves fashion and although it freaked her out to begin with when she was labelled a fashion icon, it’s finally feeling like something she’s OK with.”
It is thought that any designer clothing collections from the Duchess will not be high end merchandise, but more from a high street price range, as the source revealed: “It’s important to her that it’s accessible to all. Very much high street as opposed to designer prices.”
And if the rumours are to be believed, the Duchess will start off small, with an accessory range that could include handbags and hats.
The reason the Duchess of Cambridge has trademarked her name is that no one else can use it for commercial reason, without proper permission.
A palace spokesperson told Refinery29, about the trademarking of the foundation’s merchandise, saying that it is to “protect the foundation against other people using its name illegally. We included clothing in case we choose, for example, to make t-shirts in years to come.” added the spokesperson.
So far in royal history, no other member of the Royal Family has undertaken such a commercial venture, but as Kate has gained such a following within the fashion industry, it does seem to be a natural step with her launching her very own fashion collection.
So what could we expect from a range of clothing, exclusively designed by the Duchess? We think that dress coats would definitely feature, as she has worn them on several occasions to public events, perhaps a range of court shoes, handbags would seem to be an obvious choice, as the Mondalu handbag, so favoured by her sister Pippa proved to be an instant sellout, and even prompted a bag to be named in her honour.
One thing is for certain, if Kate Middleton does release a clothing line, it is sure to be an instant sellout.
