Ever wanted to know what Michael Bublé would like his women to smell like? Well now you can, for the Canadian singer/song-writer has launched his very first fragrance called ‘By Invitation’.
Apparently, the fragrance almost didn’t happen as the singer has been turning down the invitation to develop a fragrance for around 15 years.
He spoke to InStyle and told them why:
“My initial reaction when I was approached to do a fragrance around 12 to 15 years ago was no,” he said.
“I was apprehensive at first, but the more I found out and learned about the science behind creating a fragrance, the more interested I became.”
So interested in fact that years later he decided to create one for women. So what changed his mind?
Bublé states on his website:
“It’s no secret that I’m a hopeless romantic. It’s in every note I sing and every song I write. The idea was to create a special ‘invitation’ to fans into my new world of fragrance.”
He also had a special reason for coming up with the name ‘By Invitation’:
“I’m inviting women to enjoy a beautiful scent that represents my personal taste and imagination. By Invitation is what I’d call “Love in a bottle”.”
Bublé didn’t just name the perfume, he got involved in every single process, from designing the bottle to choosing the individual notes in the scent. He even got his beautiful wife to participate in some of the creative processes.
“I wanted people to fall in love with the scent, so we spent a lot of time and effort in developing it,” he says.
“I brought it home to my wife, and she loved it, which was a really big deal for me—I knew if she didn’t like it, she’d be brutally honest with me.”
To create the perfume, Bublé took inspiration from fragrances he loved to wear in his youth. In particular, Diptyque’s Tam Dao, which both men and women can wear, as it has a scent that appeals to all sexes.
It was the many years spent experimenting with Joop and Calvin Klein’s Obsession however, that he really drew references from.
“I wore probably half a bottle of each every day. I was 15 years old thinking I was the coolest guy on the planet, but I probably left the whole school smelling like that,” he says. “Even now, it’s funny because I smell those fragrances and it takes me right back to high school.”
Memories and scent are a strong link for the singing star, and evoke powerful emotions, even today. The Body Shop’s White Musk is an example of this, with one whiff of it instantly transporting Bublé back to memories of his grandma.
“My grandma was this young, really hip grandmother, and she loved White Musk. When I was a kid, I would save up money for presents, and every Christmas, I would buy her a little bottle of White Musk,” he continues.
“I lost her last year and we had a beautiful life together, but memory is a strange thing and it keeps people alive. Every time I smell White Musk, I think of her, and it gives me nothing but happy thoughts.”
Bublé is hoping that his new scents will eventually evoke strong memories, but ones that are pleasant and happy.
“I honestly hope the fragrance gives them happiness, brings them joy, and makes them feel sexy and secure,” he adds.
“Listen, the world is a crazy, scary place, and I love the fact that I get to be a small part of taking people away from all the craziness.”
