You may have tried to get a “free credit score report” sometime ago only to find that “free” did not really mean free. The credit report was an advantage that a company offered as an incentive to signing up for some sort of membership. That bait and switch tactic may have blocked you from even trying to get your credit report. You should know that things have changed recently and now you are entitled by law to receive one free credit report per year. In 2003 the Government passed the “2003 Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act” and what the law says is that every American is entitled to receive a copy of their credit score and report once a year from the three major credit bureaus.
How To Get Your Reports
Since paying a fee of 79 to 99 dollars a year for monitoring your credit is no longer necessary, you can skip the payments and go directly to getting your free credit report, but how to do it? As it is true with most things in life nowadays, you can go online and request the credit score from the credit bureaus yourself. The three credit bureaus are Equifax, Experian and Transunion. All three have websites that will allow you to request your credit score. All you have to do is enter your information into the correct fields and you can have your credit report in minutes. The entering of your information is used only to request this information, and you should not worry about giving this information, because they already have it. You are just requesting information that is already in their records.
You can also request your information from the Federal Trade Commission. You can obtain the form at the FTC website and then send the request by mail. There are a couple of disadvantages to using this method, and the obvious one is that you do not get the results nearly as fast as you have to depend on the postal service. There is also the small chance (just like there is that chance with anything you send by mail) that your request or your credit report may be lost in the mail. The chance of getting something lost in the mail is there, but it can sometimes be greatly exaggerated. But if you do not want to take your chances, you can always use the online request from the federal bureaus.
Finally you can obtain your credit report from http://www.annualcreditreport.com. The advantage of using their website is that it combines all 3 credit bureaus without you having to go to all three of them, and the information comes back to you fairly quickly. Just keep in mind that this is a third-party service and that you are not dealing directly with the credit bureaus themselves, but the information still gets to you quickly and it is still free. This way of getting your credit score also saves you time because you only have to enter your information once and you get all scores and reports at the same time.
Keep In Mind
Remember that you are entitled to the credit reports and score once every 12 months and you do not have to subscribe to any credit monitoring services. You can if you wish to do so, and credit monitoring can be very useful, but it is not a requirement. If you do not wish to subscribe to this service make sure you go through the applications and check that all buttons that may subscribe you to those services are unchecked. The information you re requesting is yours and you should review it to make sure everything in your report is correct. If something is not then you have a right to dispute it with the credit bureaus to have it corrected or erased.
