Gentlemen, do you want to buy your partner a bottle of her favourite perfume but have forgotten what she likes? Instead of rummaging around her dressing table and dropping some unsubtle hints, how about surprising her with a new scent, based on what she already wears? Not only will you score some mega brownie points, but she will be able to tell that you’ve put a little bit more thought into the present. So how do you go about choosing a fragrance for a lady? Well, perfumes come in three basic scents; musky, fresh or sweet. So you have to decide which of the three your partner prefers.
Does she always smell a little fruity and zingy? Or are the fragrances on the sweeter side? Or she might prefer the stronger, less subtle scents of wood and musk. Once you’ve decided which one she likes, you can look at our guide below and get choosing:
Refreshing and Zingy
Our first refreshing perfume is DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom. A glorious fresh scent with top notes of sparkling grapefruit cassis apricot, heart notes of muguet rose jasmine and base notes of apple flower blonde wood. Really zingy! Next up is Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh. A fruity, bubbly and fun version of the classic Daisy perfume. Starts with Natural Raspberry, Grapefruit and Pear, over a gorgeous and very Daisy-esque heart of Violets, Wild Rose, and Apple Blossom and base of Musks, Cedarwood and Plum. If she loved Daisy and wants a lighter version, this is ideal. Perfect for daytime wear is Clean Outdoor Fresh Eau de Parfum Spray. A very tropical scent with hints of water lily violet leaves & sparkling bergamot.
Sweet and Powdery
The classic sweet smell that many ladies adore is Angel by Thierry Mugler. It has an almost chocolatey base scent, that the longer you wear it, the more it changes into a gorgeous vanilla smell throughout the day. It is quite a strong smelling perfume so if you fancy something a little lighter, try Vera Wang Princess, which has a sweet, but tart scent of exotic flowers and a light fruity floral scent. Other good options are Pink Sugar by Aquolina, which has a delicious smell of toasted marshmallows, and is probably the sweetest of our scents, or Miss Dior Cherie, which has base notes of caramel and finishes with subtle strawberries. Finally, Envy me by Gucci starts of with pink musk, seringa and white tea and has base notes of peony, jasmine, pink peppers, litchi, pomegranate and pineapple.
Spice and Musk
A great fragrance with all the hints of musk and spices is Poison by Dior. Described as the ultimate weapon of seduction, it has a rich blend of spicy, fruity and amber notes warmed by honey and musk. For a real treat, try Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Classique, with top fragrance notes of anise, orange blossom and tangerine, middle notes are ginger, orchid and ylang-ylang and finishing with vanilla, musk and amber. For a classic spicy scent, try Calvin Klein’s Obsession. With dominant notes of mandarin, bergamot and bright lemon, blended with lush peach, and finishes with oriental aromas and spices.
If the above has left you still with no idea of what to buy your loved ones, you can always opt for a classic scent, based on the persons age. So for grandmothers try L’air Du Temps Perfume by Nina Ricci, described as a refined, flowery fragrance, an old school scent that possesses a blend of gardenia, musk, rose, carnation and sandalwood. For mums, Chanel No.5 is always a great classic. For partners try Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, which is a subtle not overpowering scent. And for younger girlfriends, how about Britney Spears Fantasy.
