How serious is fatigue?


Fatigue is a feeling of exhaustion, tiredness, low energy and weakness. It often acts as a sign of more serious problems to come, such as trauma, mental illness, and infection.

Fatigue is common in people of any age, although it is extremely popular in those that are elderly, or who are ill with some form of disease. This extreme feeling of tiredness can last briefly for just a few days, and improves after a period of rest, or it can be chronic, lasting for a longer period of time and often triggering illnesses such as depression. It has even been known to be the cause of heart failure as well.

The main causes of fatigue are diseases, disorders, or other conditions such as anemia. Occurring in a minor form is fatigue caused by jet lag, for example, compared to a more serious form of fatigue, such as a type of cancer. Examples of how fatigue is caused are:

  • Allergies, such as Hayfever
  • Dehydration
  • Depression
  • Pregnancy- both during and immediately after
  • Insomnia
  • Anemia
  • All different types of cancer
  • Type 1 and type 2 Diabetes
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease

There are also a large amount of medicines that can cause fatigue, or at the very least trigger it. These are:

  • Anti-depressants
  • Blood-pressure tablets
  • Anti-histamines
  • Sleeping tablets
  • Steroids

The problem with fatigue is that it makes someone feel extremely tired, and therefore it can be hard to shake off. For example, when you feel tired you aren’t in the right frame of mind to do things that may make you feel better. This is how depression is often caused, and is how those with chronic fatigue, especially, adopt a poor quality of life.

Chronic fatigue is a disorder that is easy to treat during its early stages. It is best if it is treated before it becomes too severe. Generally, doctors will advise a patient suffering from fatigue to take medication that makes them sleepy and therefore reduces their stress levels. It is not unusual for a change of diet to be suggested, too, as researchers have found a well-balanced diet and plenty of exercise to help those suffering from chronic fatigue. An exercise that is particularly helpful to fatigue is yoga because this increases the amount of red blood cells in someone’s blood, through the different meditation techniques used.
