High technology meets Gardening – the Smart Herb Garden

It’s not something that you usually associate with gardening, smart technology, as typically we are more used to getting our hands dirty and having to use some proper hard work when it comes to growing plants and vegetables. But for those of us who have never had green finders, or who merely have to look at a plant to cause it to whither away and die, there may be a solution.

The smart garden comes complete with specially made cartridges for a variety of herbs such as basil, thyme, lemon balm or other herbs, and the cartridges have everything you need to ensure that the herbs will grow successfully. All you have to do is water them, plug the garden into a wall socket and the garden takes care of everything else.

The team working on the smart garden used the technology of growth medium, which is a nano-tech material, especially engineered to supply plant roots that comes with the right amount of oxygen, water and nutrients at all times. Click & Grow wanted to produce the easiest indoor growth medium for home growing to compliment their smart gardens.

The next stage, after they had perfected the growth medium, was to work on the light source for the garden. They discounted the traditional LED lights which they found made the plants look unnatural and were harmful for children’s eyes. They decided on a natural-looking light system that gives plants enough light to grow, but only requires 6 watts of energy.

All in all, it took two years from the first 3D drawings, to the prototype, to manufacturing of the first batch of products, and now the company have sold an amazing 50,000 of them to date.

The Smart Garden was first launched on KickStarter, where the entrepreneurial team asked for a goal target of $75,000, but achieved a whopping $625,851 with 10,477 backers, and the whole project was funded back in April 2013.
