Just as winter is departing, our thoughts are turning to spring, and if the catwalks are anything to go by, denim is making a big comeback.
Gwyneth Paltrow knows a thing or two about fashion, and in her highly popular blog site Goop.com, she reveals what she thinks will be the new trends for denim jeans this spring.
She admits that: “Some of it is hands-down crazy, and some offer a great update to your knock-around-on-the-weekend skinny jeans.”
What she is excited about however, is showing her followers on how to use these new trends and styles and incorporate them into your existing wardrobe.
Wide-legged jeans used to be the bane of many a middle-aged woman, thanks to unflattering low waists leaving us with the dreaded ‘muffin-tops’. But now, thanks to a higher waistband and a much looser fit, these wider-legged jeans are making a return to our stores.
Ladies with an hourglass figure find these style particularly flattering, as they balance out the curvy top with a wider bottom.
Gwyneth advises that for extra balance you should add a pair of platform shoes and tuck in a slim-cut shirt.
SLOUCHY & SKINNY BOYFRIEND
Sometimes overly slouchy denim can look a little too casual, so a pair of skinny or slouchy boyfriend jeans can be a great alternative.
Anyone can wear this type of denim, as they flatter most figures. You can use them for work-wear on a casual Friday, teaming, as Gwyneth says, with a blazer and pumps. Or how about dressing them up with smart shirt and statement sweater and designer bag at the weekend.
No longer the go-to denim of choice for aging hippies, these flares are super polished and perfect if you want to add a touch of glamor. They are also ideal if you need to add a few extra inches in height.
Gwyneth says to stick a pair of sky-scraping heels on and you immediately lose the retro vibe.
Team with some snazzy sling-backs and a military style jacket in a different color to give this denim a whole new sense of style.
Jumpsuits can be tricky customers to pull off. You don’t want to look like a garage mechanic, but with some sexy accessorizing, this look can be a showstopper.
Gwyneth’s tip is to ‘treat it like you would an evening suit or cocktail dress—add statement jewelry, spike-y sandals, and a clutch.’
She also advises to make sure that the waist fit’s properly.
POLISHED DARK DENIM
The better the cut and quality, the better the look. This style is all about polished, well-cut jeans.
Gwyneth advises that the trick to wearing this style is to imagine the denim is just like a classic trouser and style accordingly.
Mix with a patterned blazer and use classic jewelry to accessorize.
The days of over-blinging are finished, as detailed jeans are now more subtle and classier in design. Gone are the studs and huge sparkling motifs, now the embellishment is simple and chic.
Keep the focus on the detailing and compliment with simple, no frills neutral clothing. Gwyneth says that primary color accessories are good, along with neutral colored shoes and sweaters.
Denim shirts are easy to wear, and depending on the accessories, or the other items of clothing, can be worn glammed up or down.
Add a little more attention to them by combining with show-stopping pieces, such as leather pants.
