Green laundry products are de rigueur for anyone with a healthy respect for the environment, but do they actually wash your clothes?
You could argue that it is the strong chemicals in laundry products that have the desired cleaning effect, the very same chemicals that are harsh on the earth.
Typically, environmentally-friendly products do not contain harmful compounds such as phosphates and bleach, instead they use plant-based formulas. And some do not use compounds at all, but employ mini pellets or cleaning ‘nuts’ to wash clothes.
In order to save the planet, we have found the best green products on the market and ranked them in order of overall cleaning and stain removal.
OVERALL WINNERECOS Earth Friendly Products Fragrance Free Laundry Liquid – £7.66 1.5L (50 washes)
This is a detergent in liquid form made from renewable plant extracts. It has a pleasant coconut smell and cleans a slightly to medium soiled wash very well. Tougher stains do require a pre-treatment.
The added softener left the clothes smelling beautifully fragranced and super-soft, and the liquid is said to be kind to sensitive skin.
BEST ALL-ROUNDERAlma Win Heavy Duty Laundry Powder – £8.90 1.08kg (19 washes)
This washing powder is a great all-rounder as it is suitable for all degrees of water hardness, all temperatures, and you can use it on whites and colours.
There was a lovely fresh smell left on clothes after washing and it left our whites dazzling. Great results for a green product.
GOOD FOR COLOURSEcover Concentrated Non Bio Laundry Liquid 1.5L – £8.99 (42 washes)
As this laundry liquid does not contain any optical brighteners it is not that good on washing whites, however, the upside is that colours keep their brightness.
This is a new and improved formula made with rapeseed oil, which means the liquid doesn’t foam up much, not great for hand washing we found, but a good clean overall.
MOST GREEN PRODUCTBio D Washing Powder 2kg bag – £7.05 for up to 34 washes
For those who want no chemicals in the powder, want the bag to be made from renewable materials and to be recyclable, and need the whole caboodle to be vegan friendly, this powder ticks all those boxes.
It also doesn’t test on animals or include animal by-products, has certification from the Vegan Society, Naturewatch Trust, BUAV and World Wildlife Foundation.
Not only that, but it cleans pretty well too.
BEST BUDGET BUYMethod Laundry Detergent – Fresh Air – £5.99 for 30 washes
Method laundry teaches us that less is more, as you only need a tiny squirt of liquid for an ultra-clean wash. This is because it is eight times more concentrated than ordinary detergent.
What we loved most was the gorgeous scent of the clothes when they came out of the machine, and the fact that stubborn stains were gone.
BEST ALTERNATIVE TO DETERGENTEco Egg Laundry Egg (720 Washes) – Soft Cotton – £19.99
If you really do not want to use any kind of detergent at all, the Eco egg might be the answer. It contains natural cleaning pellets, situated inside an egg structure that work to lift dirt away from clothes.
When we used it we were amazed at how well it cleaned. The only thing we missed was a fresh, clean laundry smell, but you can use a fabric softener or a scent-booster.
