You may or may not have heard of BB creams, in fact Garnier have just started advertising their new BB cream on national TV but what is it exactly? BB cream is known as Beauty Cream or Blemish Balm or even Blemish Cream, and is becoming immensely popular because it is a multi tasking cream.
It combines several skin care and make up actions at once, such as SPF protection, erasing fine lines and wrinkles and you can use it as a tinted moisturiser as well. Basically it is a skin care and make up product all in one.
So why are we only just seeing it in the shops? Apparently, BB cream has its origins in Germany in the 1950’s where it was diagnosed as a skin care treatment. Initially it was used by dermatologists as a treatment for laser surgery patients to help protect, soothe and heal highly sensitive skin whilst at the same time providing light coverage for post-laser scars, acne and other blemishes.
But then it become popular in Asian countries such as Korea, where women have been using it for many years. It has only come to the attention of the western world in the last year, when Garnier came up with the first BB product. In fact, Garnier’s product will be one of the first BB creams sold in American drugstores from this February.
Although there are many brands of BB creams now available, they all have the basic premise, they all contain an active anti-aging or healing ingredients, hydrating elements, and SPF, plus a slight tint to even out skin. You do not therefore need an anti ageing cream, a primer or moisturiser or a tinted foundation if you use a BB cream, so it saves you money and time when you apply it.
BB creams can come in a variety of different formulations and have other ingredients added. Some products can produce skin whitening or brightening properties. Others are especially for anti-acne, some are designed for anti-wrinkle, some are intended to even out skin tone, and others are to lighten blemish scars.
Whatever the BB cream promises to do, it does have one failing however, in that it only has a limited range of colours available. The Garnier product for instance, comes in two shades: Light/Medium and Medium/Deep.
The thing about BB creams is that they are supposed to blend in well with your natural skin tone so to have only two colours is a disadvantage. But the simplicity of them is still a huge selling point. Here are some of our favourite BB creams:
