Supermodel Gigi Hadid and US designer Tommy Hilfiger have finally released their collection to the awaiting public.
The TommyXGigi collection has been exclusively co-designed by Gigi and Tommy, and was showcased on the brand’s website last month.
The capsule collection is available to buy online at Zalando until September 9, where it will transfer into stores.
“This is the first collection I’ve ever codesigned, so it will always be very special to me,” said Gigi Hadid of her collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger.
The collection has a signature nautical theme, which lends itself beautifully to Hilfiger’s preference for red, white and blues. There are nods to Hadid’s Instagram account, with touches of her statement badges and slogans to be found on classic pieces.
“I think it was taking the iconic American feeling of Tommy Hilfiger and putting my own twist on it,” said Hadid. “We did really fun patches and added elements that we loved from our initial inspirations, but then we added our fresh twist. It’s still young and fun, still very Tommy, and very me!”
Designer Tommy Hilfiger was equally as flattering about Gigi. He told Vogue.com: “It has been a true partnership—Gigi and I worked closely together on each and every element. She was completely engaged throughout the process and the results are a reflection of her passion and creativity.”
The collection includes printed maxi dresses, flared jeans, chunky knits, leather trousers and a wool pea coat. If Hadid’s fans were hoping to get their hands on a few items however, it seems that the collection has been priced just out of reach of many.
Feedback from social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook show that many fans are upset at the high prices. Not surprising when you learn that the cheapest item in the collaboration is £11.99 for a pair of leg warmers, rising to £574.99 for some black leather trousers.
The collection was naturally modelled by Gigi herself, and shows her in a variety of poses mixing and matching clothes from her collection.
Gigi was named the global ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger last December and is also the face of the brand’s new fragrance The Girl, which was released in July.
The entire collection will be debuted at New York Fashion Week on September 9th.
Tommy Hilfiger released a statement saying that the pieces in the collection were ‘Seafaring staples are reimagined with clean cuts and fresh embellishments, from buttons and chevrons to naval badges, embroideries and sailor stripes.’
The designs, according to the brand, ‘celebrate Hadid’s unique take on modern style, fused with Hilfiger’s signature “classic American cool” heritage’.
Fans of the collaboration have been keeping up with the progress via a new Instagram account called @tommyxgigi, which has been showing behind-the-scenes shots of Gigi and Tommy working together on various pieces.
She said of the new collection: “There really is something for everyone here. Creatively speaking, it’s something that’s really true to my style—most of the pieces are things I would wear all the time. I wanted it to be something that when people look at it, they know I was the one who designed it and that it’s something I would genuinely wear. I’m very happy about it.”
