There is no doubt that Amy Winehouse was a music legend and her style of fashion was copied by many women. With her signature beehive hairdo and thick black eye liner, she personified a classic 50’s look. A fan of Fred Perry polo shirts, back in 2010 Amy had been approached by the fashion house and asked if she wanted to collaborate with the designer and the Amy Winehouse for Fred Perry Collection was born. Proving to be a huge success, the singer had finished on her Autumn and Winter designs for this year but with her untimely death it was not known if the collection would be released. Well with the blessing of her family the clothing range is now on sale and proceeds from the collection will go towards her posthumous foundation. Fred Perry will also make a seasonal donation.
The singers father Mitch said of the decision to release her final collection, “When Fred Perry came to us to ask what we would like to do with the new collection, it was natural to continue. Amy loved working on both collections and would want them to be made available.” With Amy herself describing her style as ‘an old Jewish black man’, it appears she loved working on the designs and was very happy to be offered the opportunity, “I knew exactly what I wanted, and I love Fred Perry so much. I was honoured that they would even, like, ‘Do you want to come and do a line?’ Me, like, me? I just dress like it’s still the 50s.”
The new range has 27 items including a bodycon dress at £195, a leather waist belt at £60, a bowling bag at £70, and a clutch bag at £60. The colours for Autumn/Winter 2011 are mainly black and white and feature a mix of hounds-tooth and simple flattering shapes. Richard Martin, Marketing Manager for Fred Perry stated that, “Amy has a unique sense of style that reflects the brand’s own historical reference points. She has been wearing Fred Perry for years, so we were aware she was a genuine fan of the brand. The line embraced the London spirit, as well as Fred Perry’s style and, of course, Amy’s uniqueness.” Martin continued, “The range clearly has Amy’s handwriting.” It seems the singer’s legendary status will live on through her music and her clothes.
