It’s that time of year when all the berries are gone from the trees, and there are scarce pickings for our feathered friends, out in the colder months of winter. Trouble is, in a few weeks, some birds will start to breed and this is when they will need the most nutrients that they can get. Birds will fly for miles to secure the scraps that we leave out for them, but beware, once they have established a food source, such as your hanging bird feeder, they will then come back to it, no matter how long it takes them to get there.
So make sure, if you are going to feed the birds, you do it consistently and on a regular basis. In fact, the RSPB recommends year round feeding to help restore the decline of our once common feathered friends. So with this in mind, we have sourced some of the prettiest and most iconic bird feeders that will make you want to step out into the freezing frost and fill them up, just so that you can have another look at them! Here they are:
This award-winning peanut feeder provides birds with a reliable source of food. Specifically designed to allow small birds such as tits, sparrows, nuthatchers, finches and woodpeckers feed, yet deter larger birds and squirrels with its gravity fed feeding slot, glossy surface and unique flexiperch system.
It is weatherproof and keeps nuts dry, plus it’s easy to clean and fill and prevents damage that can be caused to birds’ feet and beaks by wire and mesh. Slipcast in clay and complete with a stainless steel wire, tree protector and detailed instructions. 155mm diameter, available in blue, white or green.
An iron heart-shaped bird-feeder with rusted, weathered finish. Designed to be used either with an apple or any other appropriate fruit, or seed ball. This heart-shaped apple bird feeder will make the perfect gift for anyone who loves attracting birds to their garden.
Or treat yourself and the birds in your own garden. Created for any size of bird including smaller ones such as tits, finches etc to the larger sized such as magpies and blackbirds. Measures: 27x22cm. Part of a range including matching tealight holders, also available online. Please note we have now SOLD OUT of this product and will not be able to send orders until mid January 2012.
A little bungee-jumping man-made out of seed for your garden birds to peck at. Guaranteed to get the neighbours talking and the wildlife squawking, the Bungee Birdfeeder is clearly made of strong stuff, but to be precise he’s a mix of 100% edible nutrition, including yellow millet in husk, red millet in husk, yellow broomcorn millet and red broomcorn millet.
Think of him as man-shaped muesli for ravenous tweetie birds. Failing that, think of him as a pile of birdseed shaped like a bungee-ing bloke. A fantastically quirky gift for nature lovers, Bill Oddie types and full-on fans of ornithology, the Bungee Birdfeeder puts a humorous new twist on old-school birdfeeders.
An attractive and contemporary twist on traditional design; this hand-blown glass bird feeder can be attached to a branch or under an overhang, offering a stylish way of encouraging feathered friends to dine in your garden. This glass feeder has little entry holes so that access is limited to small birds only.
Can go in the dishwasher. It is rare that the words contemporary, iconic design are applied to a bird feeder but this one will surely catch the eye and attention of everyone who sees it. A beautiful object to hang in the garden.
