They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we are not sure if this translates to fashion, as being spotted in the same frock, especially at the same celebrity do can cause untold embarrassment. Thankfully, Jennifer Aniston and Mariah Carey were at different events when they both chose to wear a monochrome gown by Valentino.
But who wore it best you might ask? Well, when you wear the same get up, this is the question the paps and the general public are going to be asking.
First to don the black strapless gown, with white statement bow was Jennifer, back in November of last year. The super cool and super slim 43-year-old actress wore it on November 15 when she attended the 26th American Cinematheque Award Gala, honoring Ben Stiller.
Fast forward to Wednesday of last week, and we spot 42-year-old songstress Mariah, spilling out of the same dress, as she attended an American Idol event, with her co-judge Nicki Minaj.
Now you would think that two months passing would be enough for the showbiz world and the celebrity journos to forget about who wore what dress, but as the cameras snapped furiously when Mariah walked onto the stage in the number at a secret screening of the first episode of American Idol Season 12 at UCLA University, there were many photographers who were experiencing a sense of deja vu.
Jennifer teamed the dress with minimal accessories, allowing the gown itself to take centre stage, and it perfectly complimented her slim and toned figure and natural understated make up. Whilst Mariah, in true diva style, blinged up the gown with over the top sparkly earrings, a silver crystal cuff and statement bling rings. Mariah’s voluptuous figure had problems with the gown, and tried on several attempts to spill out of it. Not really the look we assume Valentino was aiming for.
Jennifer was accompanied by her beau – Juston Theroux, who also wore black and white, and they looked quite the pair as he rocked a slim fitting tuxedo for the event.
Mariah meanwhile, was joined by her fellow American Idol judges Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson at the event. The latest season of American Idol has been hit with much controversy, as fellow judges Mariah and Nicki have fallen out on the show in spectacular style.
In fact, so upset was Mariah that in an interview with Barbara Walters on Monday night she admitted that the verbal spats with Nicki had made her feel physically unsafe..
‘It felt like an unsafe work environment,’ Mariah told Walters in regards to earlier reports that Nicki had made threats involving a gun. Nicki has denied all allegations, saying there are a ‘fabrication.’ But Mariah felt she was forced to act.
“Anytime somebody’s reeling threats at somebody, you know, it’s not appropriate,” Mariah said. “I’ve got two babies… I’m not going to take any chances. I did hire more security. I felt it was the appropriate thing to do.”
At the Television Critics Association panel of American Idol in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the show’s producers denied that the feud between Mariah and Nicki is a publicity stunt.
‘Whatever feuds there have been – and this isn’t just between Nicki and Mariah but Keith (Urban) and Randy (Jackson) as well – are genuine,’ Nigel Lythgoe, the show’s executive producer, said.
‘Whenever you’re in this sort of passionate situation, these things happen.’
