Aficionados of Hollywood glamour should mark December 14th and 15th in their diaries, for the wedding dresses of Dame Elizabeth Taylor are set to be auctioned off at Christie’s Auction House in New York. Two of the most iconic dresses, worn by Ms Taylor when she married Richard Burton in 1964 and again in 1975, are set to be the highlights of the auction, which will feature other dresses such as a whole outfit she wore to the Academy Awards in 1992 and many others. Many of the dresses involved are expected to reach between £20,000 and £40,000 with the wedding dress of 1964 to Richard Burton fetching at least £40,000.
The gowns worn by Ms Taylor are amongst a collection of around 400 dresses, shoes and handbags with the proceeds all going to her charity – The Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation, to which she has already raised millions of dollars. The auction is part of another sell off of her most important and personal pieces, as we reported in a previous article, her jewellery collection is also being auctioned off by her trustees on the 13th and 14th of December. Meredith Etherington-Smith of Christie’s says, “Many of the pieces in this lifetime collection were couture, custom-made for Ms Taylor by designers who became her close friends.” In fact, many of the items being sold were custom-made for the Cleopatra star by top name designers such as Versace, Chanel and Christian Dior.
The Hollywood legend passed away in March at the age of 79.
