Even if you are not a tech geek, you cannot have failed to notice that the new iPhone X (pronounced 10) is out today. With queues expected to have started a few days ago for the most dedicated of fans, we thought it would be a good idea to showcase the best smartphones for 2017.
OnePlus 5 – £490
Made in China, this is the perfect smartphone for someone who has to have one but doesn’t necessarily want or need anything too fancy, slick and also doesn’t want to spend a huge amount. It has a 16-megapixel camera and two rear ones, one is a 20-megapixel telephoto and the other a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera. It’s the cameras that make this one of our best smartphones for 2017, as it allows you to take great selfies, adjusts automatically to your environment and has a super-fast autofocus.
BlackBerry KEYone – £499
As the OnePlus 5 is perfect for those who want a great camera, this one is ideal for people who frequently email and text, thanks to the smart keyboard. You can programme each key to instantly bring up contacts or the apps you most frequently use. You can flick words via predictive text onto the screen and it has a huge battery that charges quickly and delivers amazing power and processing speeds. 12MP with a wide angle lens although due to the keyboard the display is smaller.
HTC U11 – £499
This phone has a squeeze function where you can literally programme the sides to perform different tasks such as taking selfies, launching Google Assistant or turning the torch on and off. Nice crisp 5.5in display with a 12MP camera at the rear. The front camera boasts 16MP and the phone is waterproof. There’s a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB RAM which means you’ll have no trouble streaming HD films or playing high quality games.
Nokia 8 – £499
The selling point for the new Nokia 8 has to be the Dual-Sight mode, where you can use the front and rear cameras at the same time for split screen photographs and videos. It features tech used by Hollywood filmmakers and directors and the Audio Focus allows you to accentuate the sounds you want to keep whilst reducing those you want to reduce. 5.3in display which delivers crystal clear images.
Sony Xperia XZ1 – £599
Dust and water-resistant, the new Xperia XZ1 from Sony delivers amazing battery life and incredible cameras, with the rear one on this model boasting 19MP. Network connection is much improved, thanks to the three antenna points which means your hands will not disrupt the connection no matter where you hold the phone. Lightweight and features special effects such as slow motion recording. The sharp edges do make the design look a little dated however.
Huawei Mate 10 Pro – £699
Quick, intelligent and adaptive, thanks to the world’s first Kirin AI processor. With smart battery management which is ideal for heavy users that not only lasts longer but gives the battery a longer life too. The AI processor is king here however, as it adapts and automatically selects settings to enhance photographs for example. Nice large 6in display with pinpoint clarity.
Apple iPhone 8 Plus – from £799
For those who love Apple smartphones but don’t feel they have to have the latest technology, or indeed, can’t afford it, the iPhone 8 Plus is a good alternative. It includes many of the features on the iPhone X, including twin rear cameras, a slighter smaller display of 5.5in, wireless charging and exactly the same processor.
Apple iPhone X – from £999
The smartphone nearly everyone is talking about, and for good reason. A simply gorgeous, elegant design that makes you want to keep taking it out and looking at it. Lovely display of 5.8in, it features a line of sensors at the top that allows for facial recognition (simply look at it to unlock the phone), and it will even respond to a glance, a tap or your voice. Features two rear 12MP cameras, a speedy processor, wireless charging and so much more. It is waterproof and dust proof and the selfies on this camera are amazing, thanks to the specially blurred backgrounds and super-sharp foregrounds. You can also turn yourself into talking emoji’s and send messages as them to your friends. One of the most expensive of our best smartphones but totally worth it.
