There is a trend of thought in the diet industry that if we eat as our ancestors did, and follow a structured exercise regime, we can lose weight as this is the food that our bodies are supposed to eat. It is called The Paleo Diet and it is a diet based on human evolution; basically, the same diet that our Paleolithic hunter gatherer ancestors consumed.
Supporters of the diet suggest that by eating foods already provided by nature in their freshest and purest forms, with a heavy emphasis on meat and fish, along with vegetables and fruits, as this is the body’s most digestible diet it is therefore better for us health wise. Foods that our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate are specifically designed for the human digestive system and so you will find that your digestion will appear less sluggish, your complexion will improve, you’ll have increased amounts of energy, experience weight loss, and have a stronger immune system.
And if you stay on this type of diet, these health improvements will increase and you should achieve an even higher standard of wellbeing than with any other methods you might have tried before. So what can you eat and what should you avoid in the Paleo Diet?
Foods You Can Eat:
- Meat & Fowl
- Fish and seafood
- Vegetables (inc Green leafy vegetables)
- Root vegetables and tubers
- Good fats (coconut oil, lard, tallow, olive oil, clarified butter
- Fruits (with moderation)
- Nuts and seeds (with moderation)
- Herbs and spices
The food pyramid below illustrates the main foods to include in your diet. The items at the base of the pyramid should constitute the bulk of your calories, along with good fats and the items at the top of the pyramid should be consumed with moderation.
Foods You Should Avoid:
- Refined sugar
- Grains – Wheat, corn, oats etc
- Legumes – soy, peanuts, lentils etc
- Vegetable seed oils – corn oil, peanut oil, soybean oil
All the items in the pyramid should be considered equally bad for your health in the long-term.
And at the same time, eliminating the over processed sugar laden foods now linked to causing the many diseases we are faced with in society today, will naturally allow your body to be provided with the pure nutrition that will assist in normalizing your body weight. Human beings are designed to eat and live off the land, to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and animals. Not consume vast amounts of junk food and highly processed foods.
