We hear it said all the time, that a balanced diet is important. But, is it really that important? The answer is a resounding ‘yes!’
A balanced diet helps us to maintain a good health and to keep remain a good body weight. As no single food can provide all the nutrients we need, we are encouraged by health professionals to eat a bit of everything deemed good.
So what does a ‘balanced diet’ consist of? A balanced diet is about eating just the right amount of carbohydrates, protein and fat in order to keep our bodies healthy and functioning how they should. Additionally this includes fibre, vitamins, minerals, and fruit and vegetables, too.
You may now be wondering how you can find out if your diet is one that is balanced. A balanced diet generally consists of the following:
- Meals should be based on varying foods that include starch.
- Eat five fruit and vegetables a day, without fail.
- Eat fish and other foods high in protein.
- Cut down on foods that are high in saturated fat and sugar.
- Drink 2 litres of water each day, as a minimum.
- Always eat breakfast, as it’s the most important meal of the day.
- Take part in twenty minutes of exercise a day, which will help you to maintain a healthy weight.
Foods can be split into five different food groups: potatoes, cereal and bread; fruit and vegetables; milk and dairy; meat and fish; and foods containing fat and sugar. With this in mind, your daily diet should consist of foods from each of these different food groups, just of varying amounts. For example, fruit and vegetables should make up a third of your daily food, with potatoes, cereal and bread accounting for another third. The final third of your daily diet should consist of an equal amount of meat/fish, fat or sugary food and drinks, and milk and dairy products.
With this in mind, providing you follow the above, either already or from now onwards, your diet will be one that is balanced. As a result you will be/become a healthier person and feel the benefits of it within a matter of days. Someone who eats a lot of fat and sugary foods, and less fruit and vegetables is normally a person who sleeps a lot and feels lethargic.
