Dental Fillings Without the Painful Drilling?

You know what it’s like; you’re sitting in the dentists chair and you have just had ‘the injection’ and now you are waiting for the drilling to commence. Not the best start to your day but for some people this can be absolutely panic inducing. It can even make people acquire a phobia of the dentists, becoming so scared of the needles and drilling that they are too afraid to visit them, forcing them to put up with agonising tooth decay and unnecessary pain. So what if there was a gentler version of thdealing with tooth decay that would be easier for patients and not cause the pain of the typical dentists drill? Well now there is. A new treatment has become available that uses water in a laser which gently and precisely washes away decay in both tooth enamel and gum tissue. It is fast, efficient, there is no drilling and usually for most patients, no more numbing injections. Best of all, fillings last longer and tooth structure is preserved, extending the life of your teeth. And it is a generally pain free treatment.

The Biolase (TM) Water Laser is a high power laser and it can be used for all aspects of dental surgery. It is a laser that utilises water to perform cutting procedures. The way it works is that laser energy is passed through a mist of water spray. As the water particles are energised by the laser energy they shoot forward and hit the target tissue. Since the majority of mouth tissue cells are made up of water they make a perfect target. The water particles hit the cells and evaporate the cells water contents and the cells collapse. This is a very gentle procedure when you compare it to what a typical drill does to the tooth. When a drill hits a tooth it causes fracture lines on entry point through the enamel. Also the high speed drill causes heat. This coupled with the vibration causes a lot of the pain you feel when going to the dentist.

Since cutting both hard and soft tissues (teeth and gums) with the WaterLase® does not generate heat, vibration or pressure, many dental procedures can be performed pain-free with fewer shots, less need for anesthesia, less use of the drill and fewer numb lips. Moreover, using the WaterLase® for gum procedures reduces bleeding, post-operative pain, swelling and the need for pain medication in many cases. Individuals react differently to pain and some may be more sensitive than others so the need for anesthetic is given on an ‘as required’ basis. However, dentists using WaterLase to perform typical cavity preparations report not using anesthetic in the majority of cases. A benefit of using the WaterLase® is that dentists are able to remove tooth enamel decay, bone and gum tissue precisely while leaving surrounding areas unaffected. This conserves and allows you to keep more of the healthy tooth structure.

The WaterLase® is extremely versatile. It can be used for a wide range of hard and soft tissue procedures. From decay removal, cavity preparation, root canals, smile design, gum and bone surgical procedures and many others. Due to its conservative, gentle cutting action and coagulating capabilities, the WaterLase® performs many soft tissue (gum) procedures with little or no bleeding and less post-op swelling. And if you are one of many patients who opt for no shots or anesthesia, a WaterLase® dentist can perform cavity preps in all areas of the mouth in just one visit. This technology also gives trained WaterLase® dentists the ability to painlessly perform many procedures that were previously referred to specialists.
