Cruise Holidays Are Better Value Than Ever

Research from the Passenger Shipping Association shows that cruises are getting better value than ever, with prices coming down last year. The average cruise now costs less than £1000. As cruises include all meals and many extras you usually have to pay for on other types of holidays, it is no wonder that more and more Brits are opting for a cruise. A record 1.62 million Brits took a cruising break in 2010 making cruises one out of every nine package holidays taken.

“The success of UK cruising, during one of the toughest economic periods the world has seen, can be attributed to the excellent value for money and the fantastic variety of a cruise holiday,” says William Gibbons, director of the Passenger Shipping Association. “The choice and diversity of cruising has never been greater – from intimate, ultra luxury yachts to floating passenger ‘resorts’.”

Nearly half of cruises taken by Brits depart from a British port meaning no flights are needed, an increasingly popular option. Most Brits take ocean cruises, but figures from website tour consolidator Door2tour.com suggest two in ten take a river cruise and that mini cruises are also a very popular option. Cruises can make excellent holidays for families as well as couples and singles. With such a wide variety of ships and itineraries available it is easy to find a cruise holiday to suit.

Door2tour.com report that Northern Europe appears to be the favourite destination for cruise holidays with the most popular itineraries The Baltics and the Norwegian Fjords. The Caribbean also remains a favourite for cruise holidays to explore its many islands such as St Lucia, Barbados and Cuba.
“It certainly looks like cruise holidays are the way to go this holiday season if our recent sales figures are anything to go by,” says Rachel Jones, online PR & marketing co-ordinator for Door2Tour.com. “Households are facing a number of financial hurdles this year, therefore many are considering carefully what to do when it comes to their annual holidays in 2011.”
